Wentworth Takes Down Volleyball, 3-1

BOSTON – Suffolk volleyball dropped a Conference of New England Contest to Wentworth, 3-1, Wednesday night at Tansey Gymnasium. The league setback came by set scores 25-20, 24-26, 25-5 and 25-12.  

THE BASICS

SET ONE RECAP (25-20, WENTWORTH)

  • Suffolk the lead first, 2-1, but Wentworth responded with eight unanswered points to put the blue-and-gold in a 9-2 hole. 
  • The Rams fell behind by as many as nine multiple times with the last nine-point gap at 20-11. 
  • The blue-and-gold battled back with a 9-2 run to pull within two, 22-20. 
  • Three straight points by WIT closed out the set in the Leopards' favor. 

SET TWO RECAP (26-24, SUFFOLK)

  • Suffolk found itself in a 9-2 hole. 
  • The Rams pulled back with a 7-1 run to trim the margin down to one, 10-9. The rally featured kills from McKenna KeowenChloe Clement and Grace Cervenka and aces by Aislinn Lanigan and Keowen. 
  • Out of a Wentworth time, the Rams leveled the playing field at 10-all behind a Keowen ace, her third of the night. 
  • From there, matters would lock five more times with last coming at 22-22. 
  • The Leopards leapt ahead to a 24-23 lead. 
  • Suffolk soared back with four consecutive points to take the frame. The rally saw back-to-back kills by Sami Shore, a Keowen kill and a Clement ace sealed the comeback set for the visitors, 26-24.  

SET THREE RECAP (25-5, WENTWORTH)

  • Suffolk faced a double-digit deficit 12-2. 
  • The Leopards did not let up and coasted to the 25-5 set win.  

SET FOUR RECAP (25-12, WENTWORTH)

  • A 9-2 deficit forced Scott Blanchard to use a timeout early on. 
  • The huddle did not help the Rams as Wentworth stretched its advantage to 12, 20-8. 
  • The blue-and-gold was unable to make up enough ground and the Leopards locked up the set and match.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Shore led Suffolk's attack with 10 kills. The sophomore also supplied two digs and one assist. 
  • Keowen's all-around effort featured six kills, seven digs and three aces. 
  • Clement chipped in six kills, three digs, one ace, one assist and two blocks. 
  • Jayla Martinez added 16 assists, four digs and one kill. 
  • Lanigan logged 11 handouts, four aces, three digs and one kill.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • The last three matches between Suffolk and Wentworth ended via 3-1 decisions.
