Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Takes Sixth at GNAC Championships

BOSTON – The Suffolk men's and women's cross country teams each took sixth place in their respective heats of the GNAC Championships at Franklin Park Saturday afternoon. 

Norwich took the conference crown on both sides with 21 total points on the men's side and the Cadets totaled 50 points and won a tiebreaker with Simmons to capture the title on the women's side.

For the Rams in the women's 5k freshmen Emily Manfra and Emma Weisse finished second and third, respectively for first-team all-conference honors. Manfra was eight seconds behind individual finisher, Kanee Gomez-Hixson to become the first Rookie of the Year in Suffolk's history thanks to a time of 20:02. One second later Weisse crossed the tape to take home third. 

Michelle Kearney, Audrey Kopichand Lily Nelson placed 52-54. Kearney came through the chute in 23:12 for 52nd with Kopich and Nilsen just three and four seconds later, respectively. 

Madison Veit paced 85th in the field of 96 runners thanks to a  time of 26:54. Allison Espinoza rounded out the Rams' runners with a time of 29:39. 

Kopich represented the Suffolk women on the conference's all-sportsmanship team. 

On the men's side, junior David Campisano, who earned a spot on the all-sportsmanship team, placed 21st (28:49) and Paulo Guedes finished 31st (29:58). Freshman Stephen Smart turned in a 55th-place performance (33:32) with classmate Ruben Torres (34:22) taking home 57th. 

Michael Rotchford (65th - 39:52) and Matthew Garrison (71st - 51:45) rounded out Suffolk's competitors.
