Volleyball Sets Program Win Records with Sweep of Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Suffolk volleyball rewrote its record books Saturday afternoon as it captured its 21st win of the season behind a 3-0 victory over Mass Maritime at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center. The record-setting triumph came by set scores 25-14, 25-23 and 25-7.

SET ONE RECAP (25-14, SUFFOLK)

  • Suffolk's early 7-3 lead bloomed into a comfortable 12-7 cushion. 
  • The Buccaneers continued to battle and kept the gap at four, 15-11.
  • A 7-2 Ram run lengthened the lead to double-digits, 22-12. 
  • After MMA put up back-to-back points, Suffolk scored the final three of the set on a McKenna Keowen kill and blocks by Grace Cervenka, Keowen and Isabelle Huzar.

SET TWO RECAP (25-23, SUFFOLK)

  • The second set was more even tempo with six tied scores with the last at 15-all. 
  • MMA used a 4-1 stretch to put the blue-and-gold in 19-16 hole. 
  • That three-point gap remained at 22-19. 
  • Suffolk outscored the Buccaneers 6-1 down the stretch to come back and take the frame, 25-23.  

SET THREE RECAP (25-7, SUFFOLK)

  • Suffolk jumped out to an 8-0 advantage that turned into a 16-1 lopsided lead. 
  • It was cruise control from there on out as the Rams coasted to the 25-7 set win.    

STATISTCALLY SPEAKING

  • Keowen finished with a 16-kill, 13-dig double-double with three aces, two assists and one block. 
  • Sami Shore added nine kills on a .643 connection rate with one block. 
  • Jayla Martinez took on the bulk of the setter's role with 24 handouts. She added two assists, two digs and one kill. 
  • Morgan Kelsey added 16 digs, five aces and one helper. 
  • Tatum Kalt pitched in 11 digs, five aces and one handout.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk won its 21st game of the year, a new single-season win mark for the Rams. 
  • Suffolk remains unbeaten, 17-0, in the all-time series with Mass. Maritime. 
  • The Rams sept the Buccaneers in all, but four meetings. 
  • Suffolk is now 7-0 at MMA. 
  • SUffolk is 3-0 against MMA with Scott Blanchard on the sidelines.
  • Keowen became the third member of Suffolk's volleyball program to serve 200 career aces. The senior reached the feat with her first ace of the night. She joins Kelsey and current assistant coach Talia Lombardo as the only Rams in program history to serve 200 career aces. 
  • Keowen had her second straight double-double, 12th of the season and 28th of her collegiate career.
