Volleyball Keeps Winning, Tops Eastern Connecticut State, 3-1

BOSTON – Suffolk women's volleyball pushed its win streak to five as it bested Eastern Connecticut State, 3-1, Saturday afternoon to wrap up a Military Appreciation tri-match at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court. The victory came by set scores, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20 and 25-23.

THE BASICS

SET ONE (25-22, SUFFOLK)

  • Eastern Connecticut State sat in front early, 12-7.
  • The Rams stormed back with seven straight points to flip the script, 14-12. Jasmine James and Chloe Clement supplied one kill apiece in that run that saw McKenna Keowen serve one ace. 
  • After the teams traded points Suffolk clung to the advantage, 16-15. 
  • Eastern Conn. State poured in four unanswered to put the blue-and-gold in a 19-16 hole.
  • It was Suffolk's turn to claw back once again and it did with a 4-0 run to go up, 21-20. 
  • Back-to-back points from the Warriors put the visitors in front, 22-21. 
  • Suffolk capitalize on an Eastern Conn. State attack error that leveled the playing field before it put the set away thanks to a Jayla Martinez ace, James kill and a block from Sami Shore and James.  

SET TWO (25-22, EASTERN CONN STATE)

  • This time, Suffolk was up early, 11-8. 
  • Eastern Connecticut State came back to tie things at 11-all. 
  • The playing field would level four more times with the last coming at 20-20. 
  • The Warriors took over from there as they outscored the Rams, 5-1, to win the stanza, 25-21, which evened the match at one set apiece. 

SET THREE (25-20, SUFFOLK)

  • Trailing 10-9, Suffolk went on a 5-1 spurt to take a 14-11 cushion. 
  • The Rams remained in front 18-14, before the teams nearly went point-for-point the rest of the way and the early lead paid off for the blue-and-gold. 

SET FOUR (25-23, SUFFOLK)

  • Suffolk had to battle back once again as the Warriors jumped ahead 6-2. 
  • The Rams chipped away slowly and tied things at 10-all and against 12-12. 
  • Eastern Connecticut State would net let go of its advantage and rebuilt a four-point, 18-14, margin. 
  • The blue-and-gold erased that with four unanswered to make it a new set, at 18-all. 
  • A back-and-forth affair saw things even at 22 before Maggie Barr sent a kill home to push the visitors ahead, 23-22. 
  • Shore supplied a set-tying kill before back-to-back Warrior attack errors gave the set to the Rams, 25-23.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Keowen registered a 22-dig, 13-kill double-double with four aces, two blocks and one assist. 
  • Grace Cervenka added eight kills and five blocks. 
  • Shore finished with seven kills, five digs, two blocks, two aces and one assist. 
  • Martinez recorded 24 assists, six digs, two aces and one kill. 
  • Aislinn Lanigan tallied 15 assists and four digs. 
  • Morgan Kelsey added 18 digs, three handouts, one ace and one kill.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk, who is off to its best known start in program history, won its fifth straight contest. The five wins in a row are the most for the blue-and-gold since stringing five victories together Sept. 9-16, 2023.
  • Suffolk oved to 2-2 all-time against Eastern Connecticut State. 
  • The Rams welcomed the Warriors to Boston for the first time. 
  • It was the first match between Suffolk and Eastern Conn. State to go longer than three sets. 
  • The Rams are unbeaten, 2-0, versus the Warriors under Scott Blanchard's guidance.
  • Shore matched a career-high five digs. 
  • Keowen had her 17th collegiate double-double, second of the season.
