Barbera, Fabiano Named 2020 Volleyball Captains

BOSTON – Suffolk volleyball will be led by the senior of Kayla Barbera and Hannah Fabiano as head coach Scott Blanchard gave the duo captain roles for the 2020 season.

Fabiano starts her second season with a leadership role, while her co-captain, Barbera, begins her first reign in the position.

"I'm looking forward to having Hannah back in her role and the addition of Kayla will bring the perfect balance to the leadership of the program," Blanchard said. "These two players, along with their senior classmates, Ashley Fahey and Dakhensey Marcellus, have been the driving force behind the turn-around of the program."

Behind Blanchard and the Rams' core upperclassmen, that have been led by Barbera and Fabiano the last two campaigns, Suffolk volleyball has worked its way into a postseason contender.

A year ago, the blue-and-gold posted the most wins in program history, going 19-11 in the regular season, to upstage a 22-year record of victories in a single-season set by the 1997 squad (18-3). From there, Suffolk went on to win its 20th match, its first home postseason win in the Rams' record books.

Fabiano found her spot on the All-GNAC third team for the second time in her career in 2019 after averaging close to 3.00 kills and over 2.00 digs per set last season. The outside hitter, who hails from Litchfield, New Hampshire, has amassed 725 kills, 530 digs, 82 aces and 70 blocks in 81 matches and 281 sets played.

Barbera, meanwhile, has taken the court in nearly 300 sets in 87 matches. The outside hitter from Wakefield, Rhode Island, has put up 608 kills, 548 digs, 73 aces and 45 blocks.

Barbera and Fabiano had their senior seasons delayed as Suffolk's traditional season in the fall of 2020 was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Decisions for possible matches in the spring of 2021 will be determined at the conference and university levels in March.
