Volleyball’s Season Ends in GNAC Semifinals at No. 21 Johnson & Wales 

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Suffolk volleyball saw its standout, historic 2019 campaign close Thursday night as the fourth-seeded Rams fell to top-ranked, No. 21 Johnson & Wales in straight sets in the GNAC Semifinals at the Wildcat Center. The season-ended sweep came by set scores 25-9, 25-10 and 25-17.

  • The score was lopsided early, 10-3, in the Wildcats favor. 
  • JWU continued to pile up the points, going up by 15-7, before sealing the set on a 7-0 run.

  • Suffolk trailed 10-3 for a second straight stanza. 
  • The hosts surged ahead 19-6. 
  • The Rams rallied a 4-1 spurt together to slice the deficit in half, 20-10. 
  • Johnson & Wales scored the next five points to take the frame, 25-10.  

SET THREE RECAP (25-17, NO. 21 JOHNSON & WALES)

  • It was a back-and-forth opening with four tied scores and three lead swaps that had Suffolk in front, 6-4. 
  • The see-saw affair continued until the Wildcats broke a 9-all tie with five unanswered points to swing momentum in their favor, 14-9. 
  • Suffolk attempted to catch up, but another scoring rally by the nationally ranked foes pushed the distance to 18-11. 
  • The blue-and-gold managed to pull back within five, 20-15, but was kept there as JWU matched point-for-point with the visitors to lock up the sweep.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Hannah Fabiano and Kayla Barbera anchored Suffolk's attack with six kills each. The former added a pair of digs, while the latter chipped in six digs, two assists and one ace.  
  • Stephanie Rheaume notched five kills, one handout and one dig. 
  • Harmony Johnson set-up the offense with 15 helpers to go along with two digs. 
  • Dakhensey Marcellus paced the defense with 15 digs. 
  • Kenzley Bell had an all-around outing with five assists, five digs, two kills and one ace. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk competed in its second GNAC semifinal, first as the field's fourth seed. 
  • Both of the Rams' semifinal showdowns have come against Johnson & Wales.
