Volleyball Puts Down Regis, 3-1

BOSTON – Suffolk volleyball saw a pair of personal-bests and double-double performances in a 3-1 victory over Regis Wednesday night at the Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court.  

THE BASICS

SET ONE RECAP (25-18, SUFFOLK

  • Suffolk charged to a 5-0 all off kills and blocks to force an early Regis break. 
  • The break was no true match for the blue-and-gold as the blocks and offensive output continued and gave the hosts a 9-1 advantage. 
  • A 3-0 Regis run made things interesting and trimmed the distance to five, 9-4. 
  • Suffolk gained a six-point lead twice, at 15-9, and again at 18-12, but once against the Pride pulled back. 
  • This time the visitors outscored the hosts, 6-2, to slice the margin to two, 20-18, which forced Scott Blanchard to take a timeout. 
  • Blanchard's break paid off as Suffolk scored the final five points, even with a Regis timeout in the mix, to take the frame.  

SET TWO RECAP (28-26, REGIS)

  • Out of a 4-all tie, Suffolk strung together four points in a row to double Regis' points and force the Pride to use a timeout. 
  • The Rams pushed their cushion to as seven, 13-6. 
  • Regis had spurts here and there to keep things interesting, none more than when it went on a 5-1 stretch to level the playing field at 16-all. 
  • The score evened twice more before the lead exchanged in Regis' favor, 20-19. 
  • Once the Pride went up a pair, Blanchard called his team over to talk things through. 
  • Out of the huddle, Suffolk played catchup and leveled the playing field twice, before an ace from Kayla Barbera swung momentum into the Rams' favor. 
  • Stephanie Rheaume registered a huge block solo for set point in the Rams' favor. 
  • The Pride had other things in mind as it came back to equalize things at 24-24. 
  • It turned into a contest that would be determined by the team that would score two in a row and Regis was the team to do it.  

SET THREE RECAP (25-22, SUFFOLK)

  • Suffolk trailed by four, 12-8. 
  • The Rams chipped away the deficit and pulled within one, 16-15. 
  • Regis used its first timeout to gain composure. It worked for a bit, but the Rams rallied and Monica Bolduk came in to serve to knot the score at 21-all on an ace. 
  • A Pride attack error put the Rams ahead by one before the score locked at 22.
  • Regis used its second timeout of the set and Suffolk scored three straight to take the set.  

SET FOUR RECAP (25-20, SUFFOLK)

  • After an opening that featured five tied scores and four lead changes, Suffolk used a 5-1 stretch to go up 10-7. 
  • The Rams remained in front 15-11 before Regis made things interesting with a 5-2 run that sliced the distance to on, 17-16. 
  • The blue-and-gold rattled off four consecutive points to grab a 21-16 cushion. 
  • Regis made a last-ditch effort to comeback and scored three straight to cut things back to two, 21-19. 
  • It was all the hosts the remainder of the way as they outscored the visitors 4-1 to lock up the set and match.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Barbera had a day with a powerful 21-kill, 16-dig double-double effort that anchored the Rams. The junior added a pair of aces and one block. 
  • Fabiano produced a double-double as well with 12 kills and 13 digs to go along with three aces and one block. 
  • Harmony Johnson set-up the offense with 49 helpers. The Rams' rookie added six digs, four aces, one block and one kill. 
  • Kenzley Bell was on the verge of a double-double with 16 digs, nine kills, one ace and one block. 
  • Rheaume pitched in six kills and five blocks, while Sarah Mullahy added five kills, one ace and one set-up.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk defeated Regis for the second straight season to move level the all-time series at 8-8. 
  • The back-to-back wins versus the Pride are the first for the Rams since stringing five triumphs in a row together from 2002 to 2006. 
  • Suffolk and Regis played four sets for the second straight season. 
  • The win marks Suffolk's 17 of the season, which ties second all-time in the program history with the 2003 squad that went 17-12 overall. 
  • Barbera had her ninth collegiate double-double, fourth of the season. 
  • Barbera notched a personal-best21 kills. 
  • Johnson handed out a career-high 49 assists.
  • Fabiano produced her 13th collegiate double-double, fifth of the year.
