Volleyball Falls to Emmanuel, 3-1

Senior middle hitter Moriah Logan (Halifax, Mass.) collected a match-high 12 kills to lead the Emmanuel College women's volleyball team past Suffolk University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action, 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 25-15), Wednesday evening at the Jean Yawkey Center gymnasium. With the victory the Saints stay perfect in GNAC play, improving to 2-0 in the conference and 7-12 overall while the loss drops the Rams to 8-10 overall and 2-4 in the GNAC.

A service ace by freshman middle hitter Brittany Tutalo (Johnston, R.I.) in the opening set put the hosts ahead 11-4 midway through the action before the Rams made a surge to make things interesting. A Suffolk kill by junior setter Sarah Arbogast (Chesterfield, Mo.) followed by two EC hitting errors pulled the visitors to withint two points at 13-11 but the Saints were able to regain control of the frame behind the service of sophomore outside hitter Christine Durkee (Salem, Conn.) who helped the offensive roll off four straight points to make it 17-11. Suffolk could never make up the six-point difference as the Saints would hold on for the 25-19 win in the opening set.

The Rams evened the match at 1-1 with a strong performance in the second set, putting down 12 kills behind a .222 hitting percentage compared to the Saints dismal .056 hitting percentage in the set. Arbogast led the way with four kills while sophomore middle hitter Tori Brillaud (North Andover, Mass.) and junior right side Erica Begin (Windham, N.H.) each chipped in with three kills in the 25-19 win for the visitors.

The Saints responded with the third set with a 25-17 win to go ahead in the match, 2-1. Freshman outside hitter Danielle Rose (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) and sophomore right side Sarah Colby (West Barnstable, Mass.) each had three kills in the set while a strong net game forced the Rams to hit a negative -.069 from the floor.

Emmanuel continued to pressure the Rams in the fourth and final set, taking the game 25-15 for the 3-1 win in the match. Logan turned it on in the final set collecting six of her 12 kills on 12 attempts to lead the hosts to their second GNAC win of the season.

Rose and Tutalo each ended the match with 10 kills apiece for Emmanuel while the setting duo of sophomore Alison Donnelly (Longmeadow, Mass.) and freshman Shannon Dudley (Arroyo Grande, Calif.) dished out 33 assists in an all around team effort. Defensively for the Saints, sophomore Cara Callahan (Medway, Mass.) (14), Durkee (13) and senior Yun-Ting Lee (Keelung, Taiwan) (11) all recorded double-digit dig totals in the win.

For the Rams, Brillaud finished with a team-high 10 kills and 13 digs for a double-double while Arbogast added seven kills. Junior libero Colbey Kennedy (Old Lyme, Conn.) matched Callahan's game-high of 14 digs.

The Saints will return to action on Tuesday, Oct.8 for a GNAC tri-match in Nashua, N.H. vs. Rivier University and Emerson College with play beginning at 11:00 AM while the Rams also return to the court this weekend when they head to Northfield, VT for a GNAC tri-match of their own vs. Norwich University and Simmons College starting at 12:00 PM.
