Women’s Tennis Takes Down Emerson, 7-2, on Senior Day

BOSTON – In its final home match of the season, the Suffolk women's tennis team took down local foe Emerson, 7-2, Friday night at Buckingham, Browne & Nichols.

Suffolk (9-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead, taking all three doubles matches. For the first time in 2015, Rebecca Eshoo and Valentina Medina teamed up as the Rams top tandem. The senior and sophomore did not skip a beat as they cruised past the Lions'  (0-9) pair of Tiziana Vazquez and Jamie CoConis, 8-0. Abby Trigilio and Isabel Rathlev quickly followed suit with an 8-2 decision against Jamie Yates and Gilesa Thomas in the second spot. Lyndsay Reese and Jacquelyn Nakamura secured Suffolk's doubles sweep as the senior and sophomore defeated Nora Gonzalez and Lalin Tasa, 8-5.

After all three doubles points were locked up in favor of the Rams, head coach Steve Counihan and the teams gathered on the first court to honor the playing careers of the Class of 2016; Eshoo, Reese and Trigilio. The threesome has helped Suffolk to a 29-28 record over the course of their careers and have qualified for the GNAC post season in each of their campaigns.

As play resumed, Medina continued her stellar first season in blue-and-gold. The San Andres, Colombia notched her sixth golden match of 2015 and fourth straight, as the Rams' ace defeated Vazquez.

Trigilio ended her playing career inside BB&N on a positive note with a 6-1, 6-2, triumph at No. 3 over Yates. Elena Cisneros put together a 6-1, 6-0, win against Thomas at No. 4 to clinch the victory for Suffolk.

Playing in the second slot for the first time this season, Eshoo clashed with CoConis. After dropping the first set, 6-0, the senior co-captain rallied in the second, 6-1, but could not hold on in the third, 10-6.

Reese tallied Suffolk's seventh point of the night with a 7-5, 6-0, performance over Gonzalez in the fifth position.

Meagan French rounded out the action for Suffolk as the freshman fell to Tasa, 6-4, 1-6, 10-7.

With second-place in the GNAC clinched and a bye in the first round of the post-season on its side, the Rams conclude regular-season action Sunday afternoon when they make the trip to Mount Ida for a 12 p.m. match.
