Women’s Tennis Blanks Albertus Magnus, Wins Third Straight

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Suffolk women's tennis team continued its winning ways Columbus Day as the Rams blanked Albertus Magnus, 9-0, at the Celentano Courts.

The victory is the second cleansheet for the Rams and the third straight victory for Suffolk, who improves to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in GNAC action. With the setback, the Falcons moves to 6-5 overall and 1-4 in league play.

Suffolk got off to a quick start, sweeping doubles action. The Rams surrendered just one game to build an early 3-0 lead. Valentina Medina and Aidiana Sagyndykova were back in action together as the sophomore and senior partnership swept Zaida Velazco and Alicia Weaver as the top tandem. Rebecca Eshoo and Abby Trigilio teamed up on the second doubles court,  as the senior duo ended Izzy Sabino's and Kelsea Wildman's five-match win-streak with an 8-1 victory at No. 2. Isabel Rathlev and Lyndsay Reese capped off doubles action with an 8-0 triumph over Kiana Vega and Chelcie Roan.

In singles play, Suffolk took four of the six matches in straight sets to escape with the conference victory. Jacquelyn Nakamura got the ball rolling with a sweep of Shamain McAllister at No. 5. Medina, who was named GNAC Corvias Rookie of the Week for the fifth time this season earlier today, followed suit with her fifth golden match of 2015 against Alicia Weaver in the second spot.

Sagyndykova finished right behind her doubles teammate as she downed Velazco, 6-1, 6-0, in the top spot.

Meagan French rolled past Vega at No. 6, before Eshoo went the distance against Sabino on the third court, but prevailed, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.

Elena Cisneros kept the cleansheet intact with a come from behind victory over Wildman, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8, in the fourth position.

Suffolk will close out its regular season home slate Friday night when it steps out of conference play and hosts Boston rival Emerson at 6 p.m. at Buckingham, Browne & Nichols.
