THE HIDDEN OPPONENT
The Hidden Opponent. Also known as THO, the organization is an advocacy group that raises awareness for student-athlete mental health and addresses the stigma within sports culture.
Statistics show that 1-of-5 US youth experience mental illness — but the reality is that 5-of-5 are impacted at some point in their lives. Elite athletes at competitive levels such as college are vulnerable to anxiety, depression, eating disorders, burnout/overtraining syndrome, substance abuse, and emotional/physical abuse. We as an athletic program at Suffolk want to shine light on mental health being just as important as physical health, and to honor the lives lost because of lacking mental health services within athletics.
Suffolk University started its own chapter of The Hidden Opponent here on campus, and the group has been developing many different events and programs for their student athletes, including guest speakers, requiring coaches to go through mental health trainings, and bringing in mental health professionals to the athletic department.
If you're interested in learning more about student-athlete mental health, the hidden opponent, or want to donate for further programming, please go to @thehiddenopponent on Instagram or www.thehiddenopponent.org.
