BOSTON – Scoring lulls played a major factor for the Rams and resulted in a Suffolk women's basketball Conference of New England (CNE) loss to Roger Williams Saturday afternoon at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 59 | Roger Williams 71
RECORDS: Suffolk (10-9, 5-7 CNE) | Roger Williams (13-6, 10-2 CNE)
HOW IT HAPPENED
A slow start by Suffolk and full-court pressure by Roger Williams allowed the Hawks to fly out to a 10-2 lead 4:15 into the contest. Amanda DeAngelis swished a baseline triple to ignite a 12-2 Rams run that sent the host ahead, 14-12. That stretch featured seven points by DeAngelis and a go-ahead trey from Colby Guinta.
The teams traded hoops to wrap up the first quarter with Suffolk up, 19-16.
Olivia Verdile sunk her second long ball of the day to get the second stanza underway and lengthen the blue-and-gold's lead to six. Back-and-forth action followed and the playing field leveled three times with the last coming at 30-all with 1:54 to go before half.
See-saw action closed things out and as the lead was exchanged on every possession before half, which allowed RWU snuck in front, 34-33.
Like the beginning of the game, Suffolk had a sluggish start to the third quarter and found itself chasing eight early, 43-35.
Unlike the first quarter, a blue-and-gold rally did not come and the Rams found themselves down double digits as the game headed to the fourth, 58-48.
Guinta drained a bucket from behind-the-arc to get the gap down to nine in the first minutes of the fourth quarter.
Roger Williams used nine unanswered points to stretch its advantage to 18, 69-51, with 6:00 left on the clock.
The Rams made one final comeback attempt with eight quick points that trimmed the margin to 10, 69-59, with 3:26 remaining.
Suffolk was unable to convert another hoop the rest of the way to take the loss.
