BOSTON – Suffolk women's basketball used a 21-6 third quarter run to come back and take down the University of New England, 59-52, Tuesday night at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court.
The Conference of New England (CNE) victory was not only the program's second-ever over the Nor'Easters, but marked head coach Ed Leyden's 500th career coaching victory, 489th triumph on the Rams' bench.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 59 | University of New England 52
RECORDS: Suffolk (10-8, 5-6 CNE) | University of New England (10-8, 7-4 CNE)
HOW IT HAPPENED
A game of five-point runs got the action going. UNE was the first team to put five points on the board, the Rams responded, before the Nor'Easters poured in five more points to put the host in a 10-5 hole with 1:49 left in the opening quarter.
A bucket by Kaia Anderson was answered with a freebie from Amanda DeAngelis that made it a 12-6 game after the first 10 minutes.
The Nor'Easters went on a 10-4 run in the first six minutes of the second stanza and the Rams found themselves down a dozen, 22-10.
The blue-and-gold attempted a comeback and outscored the Nor'Easters 8-6 down the stretch to slice the deficit down to eight, 26-18, at halftime.
Whatever coach Leyden said to his team in the locker room worked as Suffolk stormed past UNE in the third quarter, 21-6, to grab a 39-32 lead as the game headed to the fourth.
A quick 7-3 spurt by UNE got the final frame of regulation underway and made it a one-possession game, 42-39, with 8:04 left on the clock.
A basket-for-basket game ensued, which allowed the blue-and-gold to remain in front.
One last threat came from the Nor'Easters was just over two minutes left. After Ella Karavanic made a layup, the Rams missed, which gave UNE the chance to tie it or sneak in front. Fortunately for the host, Sydney Jenisch's jumper was off the mark and Colby Guinta grabbed the rebound.
From there, the game would be clinched at the free throw line and Suffolk did not miss any of its 10 shots from the charity stripe to lock up the 59-52 conference win.
