NASHUA, N.H. – In a back-and-forth battle, Suffolk women's basketball came out on the right side of the decision as the Rams held off Rivier, 77-73, Saturday afternoon at Muldoon Gymnasium.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 77 | Rivier 73
RECORDS: Suffolk (5-1) | Rivier (0-5)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk trailed by one after the first 10 minutes, 14-13.
Rivier started the second hot with seven straight points to put the blue-and-gold in a 21-13 hole with 8:10 to go before halftime.
Aisling Crowley connected on a trifecta to spark a 21-2 Rams run that pushed Suffolk in front, 34-23, with 3:27 to play before intermission. That stretch featured 10 points by Allison Bono, four from Arlenis Veloz, three by Crowley and a pair apiece by Claire Berkowitz and Amanda DeAngelis.
See-saw action closed out the second stanza and Suffolk went into the locker room up 40-27.
An even third period where each team put up 20 points kept Suffolk in front comfortably, 60-47.
Seven unanswered points by the Raiders to get the fourth frame underway made it a two-possession game with plenty of time left on the clock.
The teams traded points and the blue-and-gold managed to hang onto a 68-64 lead with 2:03 to go.
Over the next minute, Rivier poured in three freebies to cut the margin down to one, 68-67.
On Suffolk's next possession, Maddie Stewart sunk a triple for the Rams that restored a four-point gap, 71-67.
A missed layup by Rivier's Sydney Perry out of Raiders timeout allowed Suffolk to take its time and force the host to gamble with fouls down the stretch.
The Rams managed to seal the edge-of-your-seat victory at the line as they shot 6-for-8 in the final 24 seconds to lock up the victory. Jordan Moreau was a main ingredient to that finesse at the free throw line as she went 5-for-6 at the charity stripe in the last 30 seconds.
