GORHAM, Maine – Suffolk men's indoor track & field returned to competition Sunday, Jan. 23 at the USM COVID Catch Up. Matyas Csiki-Fejer earned his spot at New Englands, while Nic Malm and Carter Nevulis both registered personal records.
Csiki-Fejer punched his ticket to regionals in the mile with a first-place performance of 4:24.66 nearly three seconds faster than second-place finisher Michael Olson of Plymouth State (4:27.04). Luke Sikora and Jadan Wenceslao competed in the 16-runner field as well and finished one after the other. Sikora slid into seventh with a time of 4:51.69, while Wenceslao's 4:56.72 was good for eight.
Malm logged a 9:29.07 in the 3000. The best time in the event of his collegiate career put the senior in second place in the 13-runner field. Connor Hayward (7th – 9:40.34), Conor Garrity (10th – 10:13.79) and Zachary Martin (11th – 10:15.14) ran in the even as well.
Nico Miele rounded out the Rams' long-distance runners in the 1000 with a time of 3:06.68.
Nevulis continued to have a standout freshman campaign. He won the 55 hurdles with a 7.80 performance and took third in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 6.31.
Robert Solari joined Nevluis in the long jump, while Jack Cattie ran the 55 hurdles. Cattie took third in the hurdles with a time of 9.83, while Solari leaped 5.72 in the long jump to finish eighth. The senior captain also participated in the high jump where he cleared 1.70 meters.
Edward Abouzeid made his collegiate debut in the triple jump with a leap of 11.16 to take fourth in the field of six.
Suffolk's other standout showings were in the field events by Michael Balestra and Eddie McCarthy. Balestra took second in the weight throw with a 14.58 meter, while McCarthy earned second in the shot put with an 11.64-meter toss. Both events featured a large contingent of Rams.
The blue-and-gold will be back in action this weekend, Saturday, Jan. 29 at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational hosted by Tufts.
