Men’s Tennis to Close Out Regular Season This Week

BOSTON – The Suffolk men's tennis team will close out its regular season schedule this week with away matches at Wheaton, Curry and Norwich.

LAST TIME OUT

The Suffolk men's tennis team fell victim to Johnson and Wales in its GNAC opener Saturday as the Rams' were swept buy the Wildcats, 9-0. 

Suffolk (2-7, 0-1 GNAC) fell in its sixth straight match, slipping to 2-7 overall and 0-1 against conference competition. After the Wildcats easily sealed up the three double points, allowing the Rams to just win two sets overall, JWU rolled into singles, sweeping courts six and five, respectively to lock up the win.

LOW DOWN ON THE LYONS

Wheaton enters Tuesday's match against Suffolk at 4-7 overall on the season and 1-3 in NEWMAC play. In their most recent contest, the Lyons fell 5-4 to Springfield last Saturday afternoon. Wheaton led 2-1 after doubles play before Springfield slid by, 4-2 in singles action to take the victory. Senior Will White leads the Lyons with 12 wins in singles so far this season while the duo of Lawrence Chan and David Gassen boasts a team-high seven victories in doubles.

CATCHING UP WITH THE COLONELS

Curry (1-15) will host the Rams Thursday afternoon at the Big Nine Tennis Courts. The Colonels suffered a 9-0 loss to Endicott last Saturday after earning their lone win of the season with a 9-0 sweep at Lesley in their previous match April 14. The teams of Toma Blatchford and Richie Hefler, Charlie Paltsios and Michael Mathieu, and Daniel Rittucci and Sergei Evans all earned victories in doubles action while Blatchford, Hefler, Evans, Paltrios, Mathieu, and Ritucci notched wins in singles play.

NEWS ON NORWICH

The Rams will take on the Cadets (5-5) this Saturday in their final regular season contest and second conference matchup of the 2016 campaign. Suffolk and Norwich both sit at 0-1 in GNAC action this season. In its most recent outing, Norwich blanked Johnson State, 9-0. Through the team's 10 matches this season, junior Ian Hyte and sophomore Jeff Purdy lead the Cadets with six wins each in singles action while the tandem of Jay Carter and Tyler Eagan have a team-high six wins in doubles play.

The Rams and Cadets last met in the semifinals of the 2015 GNAC Tournament when Norwich slid past Suffolk, 5-4. In the teams' last 10 matchups, dating back to 2008, the Rams are 8-2 in contests against the Cadets.
