INDIANAPOLIS – Suffolk men's soccer heard its name announced among the 2024 NCAA Division III Championship field for the second time in program history Monday afternoon.
The packed Smith Commons Room exploded in cheers when the matchup between Suffolk and the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Tournament champ Connecticut College was announced during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show. The Rams' first-round action with the Camels is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 16 at Freeman Field in New London, Connecticut. The game will be broadcast live on NCAA.com.
Suffolk punched its ticket to the NCAA Championship when it captured the 2024 Conference of New England (CNE) crown via a shootout against Roger Willaims. The Rams came back, tied the title tilt on a header by Brady Sorensen in the 73rd minute and forced a shootout, which they won, 3-2, to claim the squad's first CNE Championship and second-ever league title in program history.
The Rams head into the NCAA Tourney with momentum on its side as they are unbeaten in their last four outings. In that span, Suffolk has outscored its foes 6-2. This season, Suffolk's offense has poured in 35 goals and limited competitors to 25 with seven shutouts, all thanks to the goalie gloves of sophomore Nathan Harlow, en route to a 10-6-5 ledger, the third consecutive campaign with double digit victories.
Under the leadership of Bill Maddock, men's soccer is one of just six Suffolk programs to compete as a team at NCAAs in the University's history. They are the first team to reach the big dance since the women's golf team made the program's debut last year. Overall, Suffolk men's soccer is the third-ever Rams' team to make multiple NCAA DIII Tournament appearances, joining the baseball program that has a University-best eight NCAA Championship appearances and men's basketball that has gone twice.
The Rams will have their work cut out for themselves as they will face Conn. College, who received votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches national poll. The Camels gained entry to the 64-team field after winning the 2024 NESCAC Championship with a decisive 3-1 upset win over No. 3 Middlebury Sunday. Conn advanced through its league tournament with a penalty kick decision over No. 8 Amherst in the quarterfinals and a 2-1 victory against No. 20 Williams in the semis. The 10-2-6 Camels ride a three-game unbeaten streak into Saturday's showdown.
Conn. College will make its seventh overall NCAA Tournament trip and second straight. The Camels have had success in the national tournament in its storied history with 2021 NCAA Champion on its resume.
The NCAA Tournament tilt will be the first-ever meeting between Suffolk and Connecticut College.
The winner of the first-round game between the Rams and Camels will advance to the second round and take on the victor of Franklin & Marshall and WestConn Sunday, Nov. 17 on Connecticut College's home pitch.
