Bill Maddock was named the head coach of Suffolk men's soccer in January 2020 and will begin his sixth season with the Rams in 2025.
In his first true year of coaching at Suffolk in 2021, after having the 2020 campaign cancelled due to COVID-19, Maddock guided the blue-and-gold into the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) era. The Rams compiled an 8-9-1 overall record and locked up the eighth spot in the CCC post season behind a 4-5-0 league ledger.
Individuals stood out under Maddock's leadership in 2021 as graduate transfer Nigel Leo garnered United Soccer Coaches Region II second team after representing the Rams on the All-CCC First-Team. Brady Sorensen joined Leo on the all-conference squad with a spot on the third team.
Maddock's second full season in 2022 was one for the Rams record books as they played their way to the CCC Championship contest for the first time in program history. Suffolk secured the fourth seed in the league tournament after it put together an 8-8-5 regular-season overall mark and a 4-2-3 league ledger. The blue-and-gold forced a 3-3 double overtime tie with Salve Regina in the quarterfinals before slipping past the Seahawks via shootout to advance to the semis where Xander Balog and the Rams defense blanked then-No. 23 Endicott, 2-0, to punch the title tilt ticket.
For the second straight season, Sorensen received United Soccer Coaches All-Region acknowledgement with a spot on the second team. He was one of five players to take home All-CCC status. Balog, Jack Phelps and Tommy Handelsman sealed up spots on the second-team, while Sorensen and Carter Van Buskirk picked up third-team nods.
In 2023, Suffolk continued to make its name known. The Rams not only received votes in the United Soccer Coaches national poll, a program first, but were staples in the regional poll through the season. The blue-and-gold assembled a 10-5-4 overall record and was a penalty kick shy of returning to the league's championship contest for the second straight season. On the conference level the Rams secured a program-best seven all-league selections. Regionally, Brady Sorensen stood out once again with his third honor in as many years with a spot on the United Soccer Coaches All-Region II second-team.
Maddock's fifth season will go down in the Rams record book as Suffolk captured the CNE Championship as the second-seed in a penalty kick shootout over Roger Williams. The blue-and-gold secured the second-seed in the conference postseason with a 6-1-2 league ledger and secured a spot in the title game with a 1-0 shutout over third seed Western New England. The Tournament's Most Outstanding Player Nathan Harlow who had 20 saves in the Rams run was a main ingredient to the team's second-ever conference crown.
The program's second-ever trip to the NCAA DIII First Round sent Suffolk to Connecticut College where Evan Van Even made history as the first Ram to score a goal in the national tournament.
Awarded poured in for the 2024 squad as Harlow, Jack Phelps and Francisco Valck all garnered United Soccer Coaches All-Region II Second-Team distinction. The trio is the first group of teammates to be recognized regionally in the same season in program history. On the conference level, seven student-athletes received all-league nods for the second straight season to tie a program record.
The athletic achievements spilled into academic success as well. The Rams have scooped up 17 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors since Maddock took over the program.
Academically, Maddock's teams have stood out with six straight (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024) United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award honors.
Maddock spent 2019-20 with the Beavers of Babson College, serving as an assistant coach to the 2019 NEWMAC regular-season and conference tournament champions.
Maddock’s one-year stint in Babson Park with the Beavers was a successful one. Babson’s six-week stay in the nine-week season in the Top 12 of the United Soccer Coaches New England Top 12 and votes in the D3Soccer.com Top 25 were shining moments, but the highlight came with the team’s first trip back to the NCAA Tournament since 2015.
Prior to his time at Babson, Maddock served as the head men’s soccer coach at his alma mater, Newbury College. The 2009 Newbury Graduate returned to his roots in May 2016. Over three seasons, he recruited 11 all-conference honorees and led the Nighthawks to a pair of 11-win seasons, which included a historic 2018 campaign that saw the squad capture the NECC regular-season and tournament crowns on the way to program’s first NCAA Tournament berth.
The 2018 NECC Coach of the Year pulled double duty while at Newbury. When he was not coaching on the pitch, he served as the coordinator of student affairs operations and spent five months as the department’s sports information director in 2017.
Maddock earned his first head coaching role at Fisher College where he served as the men’s and women’s coach in July 2011. He spent five seasons in charge of both of the Falcons programs that each rewrote school records in victories in 2015. His coached 33 all-league selections including the highest scoring female player in NAIA history, Julia Schojan. On top of his coaching responsibilities, Maddock held the role as assistant athletic director and sports information director.
In addition to his role at Suffolk, Maddock serves as the Central Massachusetts Regional Director for FC Boston.
A 2009 graduate of Newbury College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management, Maddock was a three-year starter in baseball and soccer. Maddock captained both squads his senior seasons and became the first athlete in conference and Nighthawks’ history to earn first-team All-New England College Conference (NECC) honors in two different sports.
The Marshfield, Massachusetts, native was a three-sport varsity starter at Marshfield High School where he earned varsity letters in baseball, basketball and soccer. He earned All-Atlantic Coast nods in soccer as a senior and Patriot League All-Scholastic honors in baseball.
Prior to MHS, Maddock attended the American School in London, England where he was a two-year starter across three sports and captained the basketball team as a sophomore.
Maddock, who earned his master’s degree from Endicott College in athletic administration in 2011, currently resides in Southborough with his wife, Ashley, and their sons, Liam and Henry.
