Men’s Soccer Holds Off Curry, 4-3

MILTON, Mass. – Suffolk men's soccer burst out to a four-goal lead and clung to it despite a late surge by Curry to take a 4-3 Conference of New England (CNE) victory Saturday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk put up three goals in the first half to hold a comfortable 3-0 cushion at half time. Luke Blawn struck first with help from Diego Pierantozzi 3:04 into the action. Just over five minutes later Blawn set-up Francisco Valck to double the margin. Erik Van Even used a feed from Paolo Tedesco at the 29:45 mark for the Rams' third goal of the afternoon.  

Five minutes out of the break, TJ Maselek put away an unassisted marker to pad distance to 4-0 in the blue-and-gold's favor. 

The Colonels started to play catchup in the 64th minute when Aidan Watts converted a penalty kick to put Curry on the scoreboard. 

Watts scored his second of the game at the 70:58 mark to slice the gap in half.  

Watts second good PK of the outing came with 6:15 left in regulation to trim Suffolk's advantage to one, 4-3.  before he completed the hat trick with 6:15 left in regulation.  

Mateu Farre-Torres came up big in the final six minutes as the sophomore stopped the final three Colonels shots to preserve the conference victory for the blue-and-gold. 

KEEPING UP WITH KEEPERS

  • Harlow had four saves in the victory. 
  • Farre-Torres finished with three saves.
  • Brendan Cunningham took the loss after giving up a pair of goals with one-save to his credit. 
  • Justin Ritz came in and had five saves in 70:53 of action.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Blawn paced Suffolk's scoring with one goal and one assist. 
  • Maselek, Van Even and Valck notched one goal each. 
  • Pierantozzi and Tedesco both had one assist. 
  • Suffolk outshot Curry, 18-14. 
  • The Rams had a 10-7 edge in shots on target. 
  • Both teams took five corner kicks.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk won its second straight game against Curry. 
  • Since 2002, Suffolk is now 6-1-1 versus Curry. 
  • On the road the blue-and-gold is 2-1-1 versus Curry. 
  • In CNE contests, the blue-and-gold is 3-0-1 versus the Colonels. 
  • The Rams have outscored the Colonels, 25-13 in the series dating back to 2002. 
  • Suffolk is unbeaten 3-0-1 against Curry under Bill Maddock's guidance. 
  • Blawn dished out the first assist of his collegiate career. 
  • Blawn registered a career-high three points.
