JWU Sneaks Past Men’s Soccer, 1-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With tropical Storm Jose off the New England coast, heavy winds played a role in the GNAC men's soccer contest at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex where the Suffolk Rams fell to Johnson & Wales, 1-0, Wednesday night.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 0, Johnson & Wales 1
RECORDS: Suffolk (3-3-0, 1-2-0 GNAC) | Johnson & Wales (5-1-0, 1-1-0 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Zeros remained on the scoreboard after the first 45 minutes of action. Out of the break, the hosts Wildcats used the wind to their advantage and capitalized in the 53rd minute. Andrew Vecere's corner kick was headed by Riley McNicholas right to Yohann Assouramou in front of the goal and Assouramou headed the ball into the net for his third goal in two games.

Both teams missed golden opportunities to score the first goal. In the first half, James Fisher had a look at a wide-open goal after the ball jumped free, but JWU's back line came up with a block. Erik Schneider had a breakaway opportunity, but hit the post with his shot.

KEEPING UP WITH THE KEEPERS

  • Kyle Van Cleef turned aside two attempts in the setback.
  • JWU's Nicholas Mancini made six saves for the second game in a row to record his third shutout of the year.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • The Rams had a number of chances to get on the scoreboard as they outshot the Wildcats, 11-9.
  • Suffolk also held the edge in corners, 8-6.
