BOSTON – Suffolk men's hockey starts its Conference of New England slate with a home-and-home series with Wentworth this weekend. The Rams welcome the Leopards to Louis E. Porrazzo Memorial Skating Rink Friday, Nov. 8 for a 5:00 p.m. puck drop before visiting Allied Veterans Memorial Rink in Everett Saturday, Nov. 9 for a 4:00 p.m. showdown.

LAST TIME OUT
Gavin Havens put on his hero cape as he potted the game-winning goal 1:07 into overtime to send Suffolk men's hockey to a 3-2 thrilling season-opening victory over Salem State Saturday at Rockett Arena.

CONFERENCE DEBUTS

  • In five seasons in the league, Suffolk has yet to win a conference debut, 0-4-1. 
  • Four of the Rams conference openers have come on Suffolk's home ice. 
  • Suffolk skated as the away time in its CNE (formerly CCC) debut for the first time. 
  • A year ago, Suffolk was defeated by Salve Regina, 5-2, in its first conference contest of 2023-24.
  • There have been two shutouts in Suffolk's league debuts, both 3-0 setbacks, one to Nichols in 2017-18 and one to Salve Regina a year ago. 
  • Suffolk will meet Wentworth in the conference opener for the first time since 2021-22. That battle ended in a 4-4 stalemate.
  • The Rams are 0-2-0 in the first league game of the season under Shawn McEachern's guidance. 

RAMS RUNDOWN
Suffolk won its season opener with a 3-2 overtime victory at Salem State. Gavin Havens put the game-winner away just over one minute into the extra session to push the Rams to a victory in game one for the first time since 2020-21.  

Havens leads the offensive unit with two points on an evenly divided stat line of one goal and one assist. Cole Scott and Ryan Webb have found the back of the net once each, while Shane AdlerJake Grace and Josh Milso have all handed out one assist apiece. 

CJ Hapward played in net fin the season opener. He assembled a 1.96 GAA and .950 save percentage. 

LEOPARDS LOOK
Wentworth brings a 1-1-0 record into the weekend after besting UMass Dartmouth, 5-2, and falling to then-No. 12 Skidmore, 3-0, last weekend.  

Nolan Lowe and George Weiner hold three points apiece. Lowe's came behind one goal and two helpers, while Weiner's offensive output is all on assists. Max Pineo has scored a team-best two goals. Nicholas Ramm and Alex Walicki have also found the back of the net once each with the latter also dishing out one helper. 

Both Topher Chirco and Jack McGovern has played one game in net. The two netminders each boast a 2.00 GAA. Chirico is 1-0-0 on the year with a .929 save percentage. McGovern, meanwhile, holds a .957 save percentage, but sits 0-1-0 on the year.  

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • The Suffolk, Wentworth rivalry is one of the oldest for the Rams, dating back to 1992. 
  • The Rams trail the all-time series, 19-24-3 
  • The blue-and-gold is 6-1-1 in the last eight battles, all of which came in CCC playing. 
  • There have been six shutouts in the all-time series. 
  • Suffolk is 3-3-0 against WIT when a team is kept off the scoreboard. 
  • Three cleansheets have come on the Rams' home ice (1-2-0), while the other trio came at WIT's barn (2-1-0). 
  • Suffolk and Wentworth have needed extra time to decide a winner eight times. 
  • The Rams are 4-2-2 when playing in OT against the Leopards. 
  • The blue-and-gold is 1-1-1 when playing in overtime as the home team and 3-1-1 in OT as the away team versus the Leopards. 
  • Suffolk is 4-1-0 against WIT in the Shawn McEachern era.
