SUTTON, Mass. – The Suffolk men's golf team posted its best showing at the GNAC Championships since joining the league in 2007 as the Rams placed fourth at Blackstone National Golf Club over the weekend.
Suffolk sat in second after the first day on the green and finished the two-day event with a 646 to claim fourth in the field of nine. It is the highest showing for the blue-and-gold in the history of the event. Suffolk's card was three strokes behind the University of Southern Maine and 12 short of UMass Dartmouth.
Johnson & Wales repeated as GNAC Championships. The Wildcats sat in the driver seat after day one and continued its impressive showing on day two to take the title for the second straight season.
Owen Boggini lead Suffolk. The junior was plus-13 on the par-72 course. On day one he posted a 79 and combined that with a 78 on the second day to finish with a 157, good for a share of fifth and a spot on the all-league team. The Tolland, Connecticut native is the first Ram to garner all-conference accolades since Tim Benedetto did so in 2014. Boggini's fifth-place performance is the best-ever showing by a Suffolk men's golf at the conference championships in program history. All-conference accolades go to the top five scorers.
Andrew Harper was just outside the top 10 in 11th. The junior's 161 came behind a 78 score from the first day and an 83 second-day card.
Elias Sachs and Brian Dunleavy tied for 20th with 165 each. Demetrois Stamoulis competed Suffolk golfer's on the course, finishing two strokes behind Sachs and Dunleavy to take 25th.
Suffolk will conclude its 2018 slate next weekend when it vies for the NEIGA crown at Captains Golf Course in Brewster, Massachusetts, Oct. 21-22.
