Baseball Bounces Back with 13-7 Win at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Suffolk baseball snapped a six-game skid with a 13-7 win at MIT thanks to a staff-day on the bump, and a pair of multi-run homers to take down Thursday afternoon at Fran O'Brien Field.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 13 | MIT 7
RECORDS: Suffolk (8-17) | MIT (11-13)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Colin Flynn opened the game with a single up the middle, moved to second when Max Iorio and took third on a passed ball. Alex Sorenti-Burns' single to right scored Flynn, pushed Iorio to third to set-up a first and third play. An error by the Engineer's catcher Havin Lee on the double steal allowed Iorio to come in and give the blue-and-gold a 2-0 edge in the top of the first.

MIT responded in the bottom of the second with a lead-off, solo shot by Reed Tubbs to trim the Rams' lead to 2-1.

Suffolk restored the multi-run gap in the top of the fourth. Sebastian Lampert worked a walk to get the inning underway and moved over to second behind a wild pitch. He stayed there as the next two batters went down, but Noah Greco kept the inning going as he singled to center to bring Lampert in. After Cole Hilliard barreled a base to third, the Engineers brought Jonathan Freedman in to deal for Eric Mangelsdo. The fresh arm was no match for Flynn, however, has he smashed a dinger over left field to give the blue-and-gold a 6-1 cushion.

The Engineers got one run back in the home half of the thing behind a one-run single by Phillip Hood, that sored Tubbs, who led off the frame with a double to left center.

The back-and-forth affair carried into the top of the fifth as the Rams put up three more runs to build a 9-2 advantage. This scoring outburst was behind two hits and an Engineers' error. Sam Armbruster, Hilliard and Flynn brought in one run apiece in the rally.

MIT continued to chip down the distance with one run in the sixth to slice the gap to six.

Once again, the Rams responded in their next turn at the dish as Max Martin blasted a grand slam to give Suffolk 13-3 lead.

The Engineers stayed in it as they scored one in the seventh and two more in the eighth to make it a seven-run game.

Suffolk managed to limit the host's offensive output in the ninth to just one run though to preserve the victory.
