Roger Williams Rolls Past Baseball in Game 2

BRISTOL, R.I. – Despite taking a lead in the first inning, Suffolk baseball could not hold off the hot Roger Williams bats as the Hawks put up eight runs over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to hand the Rams an 11-1, eight-inning setback in the nightcap of a Commonwealth Coast Conference twinbill at Paolino Field Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk started the scoring from the get-go with a 1-0 run lead after the first frame. Jonny Gilbride led off the game with a single to left field and took second on a fielding mishap by the Hawks left fielder. With two outs and a runner in scoring position, Marc Birbiglia barreled a single to center that brough in Gilbride to put the Rams on the board.  

Roger Williams tied things up with one run in the bottom of the third, before taking a 3-1 lead in the home half of the fourth.  

The Hawks continued to pour in the runs with a pair and sixth and seventh and four in the eighth to lock up the victory. 

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • George Breslin suffered the setback after letting up three runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings. 
  • Jake Washock gave up four runs on four hits and two walks in 2.0 innings of relief. 
  • Billy Beneke allowed four runs on one hit and three walks. 
  • JT Gunzy put together a one-run (unearned), five-hit, eight-strikeout effort over 8.0 innings for the Hawks. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Gilbride went 2-for-3 with one run to lead the way at the dish. 
  • Birbiglia brought in Suffolk's only run on one hit. 
  • Harry Painter and Luke Harder each pitched in one hit. 
  • Harder had Suffolk's lone stolen base.
