BOSTON – The Suffolk baseball team dropped a non-conference, Boston battle to UMass Boston, 14-4, Thursday afternoon at Monan Park.  

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
The scoring started right from the get-go with Suffolk putting up a pair of runs in the top of the first. The early lead was no match for the Beacons' bats, who produced at least one run in the first through sixth inning and notched multiple runs in four of those six frames to take down the Rams.  

In the top of the first two straight singles followed by an error by UMass' left fielder put Rams' runners in scoring position. Back-to-back ground outs scored the runners to give Suffolk a 2-0 edge.  

Boston turned the tides in its favor with three runs in the home half of the first and two in the second to go ahead 5-2.  

Suffolk made up some ground in the top of the third. Blase Cormier, who reached on a Beacons' error and moved to third on Will Hopkins' single, scored on a wild pitch, before Hopkins came in on Rich Giandrea's single to pull the blue-and-gold back within one, 5-4.  

UMass tacked on another run in the bottom of the third to regain a multi-run margin and put on cruise control from there, stretching its lead with runs coming in the fourth, fifth and sixth to build a double-digit distance, 14-4, after six complete stanzas.  

The ground proved to be too much for the Rams to make up and Boston walked away with the victory.  

PITCHERS PICTURE

• Kevin Sinatra suffered the setback after giving up 10 runs on nine hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 3.0 innings. 
• Worth Walrod allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits and one walk with four punchouts in 3.0 frames of relief. 
• Tyler Zell put together 2.0 innings of scoreless relief with two hits allowed and three Ks. 
• A plethora of pitchers worked on the mound for UMass with PJ McKermitt earning the decision behind 3.0 frames of scoreless work in which he gave up just two hits. 
• Joey Rogers started on the hill and went 3.0 innings on the bump in which he allowed four runs, one earned, on six hits and fanned one batter.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

• Rich Gilbride (2-4), Trevor Lee (2-3) and Shane Lake (2-3) all had multi-hit days at the dish. 
• Gilbride, Lee, Cormier and Hopkins each scored one run. 
• Cormier, Giandrea and Hopkins all brought in one run.
