BOSTON – Suffolk baseball will step away from conference competition this week as it has two non-league road battles on the calendar at Curry, Wednesday, April 17 and UMass Boston Thursday, April 18.

LAST TIME OUT
Suffolk baseball came away with a thrilling walk-off, extra-inning victory over Lasell, 3-2, Sunday night at East Boston memorial Park to sweep the GNAC doubleheader against the Lasers.

RAMS RUNDOWN
Suffolk's regular-season slate is coming down the wire. With just eight games remaining, the Rams head into the week 20-11-1 overall.  

The blue-and-gold bats have hit at a .316 connection rate this season anchored by Tim Brigham's .414 average. The left fielder has produced team-leading numbers in hits (48) and RBI (36). Connor Troio has played a crucial role at the plate as well with the designated hitter producing 20 hits at a .400 clip to bring in 16 runs. Will Hopkins (.381, 40 H, 20 RBI, 30 R, 18 SB) and Blase Cormier (.360, 40 H, 25 RBI, 26 R) are also consistent contributors at the plate.  

With just two games on the weekly schedule, Suffolk will have nearly all of its arms to work with. Michael Muscarella leads the 15-pitcher staff with a sub-1.00 ERA of 0.96 over 18.2 innings of work and 13 strikeouts. When it comes to starters, Steven Rossi holds the best ERA at 1.59 in six starts and 34.0 innings of work, in which he has sat down 26 batters. Charles Batchelder (3.41 ERA, 28 K, 37.0 IP), Kevin Sinatra (4.38 ERA, 20 K, 39.0 IP) and Worth Walrod (5.00 ERA, 41 K, 36.0 IP) make up the majority of Suffolk's starting rotation.  

COLONELS CATCHUP
Curry has fallen in four in a row to dip to 9-18-1 on the year.  

The Colonels, who are hitting .233, as a team, has just at trio of every-day batters knocking above .300 in Jared Keller (.378), Michael Strizzi (.303) and Garrett Fosher (.302). Keller leads the way in the majority of the offensive categories with 31 hits, 11 of which went for extra bases including nine doubles, 21 RBI and 12 scores. Strizzi has hit the 20-hit mark as well to bring in five runs and score nine himself. Fosher rounds out the threesome with with 16 hits, four RBI and five runs.  

Zachary Wensely holds the lowest ERA amongst Curry's consistent starting arms at 4.30. In nine appearances, seven nods, the sophomore has worked a team-high 44.0 innings, allowing 22 runs (21 earned) on 32 hits with 32 strikeouts. James Mello, meanwhile, has dealt 34.2 innings for the Colonels and put together a 4.30 ERA with 26 runs (20 earned) on 32 hits to go along with 29 punchouts. 

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • Suffolk and Curry will meet for the 40th time Wednesday afternoon. 
  • The Rams hold a commanding 31-8 all-time lead over the Colonels in the all-time series. 
  • Suffolk has strung together back-to-back victories over Curry.

BEACONS BREAKDOWN
UMass heads into the week after a sweep of Eastern Connecticut State that put the Beacons at 15-9 on the season. UMB will face Southern Maine Tuesday, April 16 prior to hosting the Rams in the Thursday tilt.  

Kyle Bourias leads the way at bat for the Beacons with a .389 average with a team-best numbers in hits (37) and RBI (20) to go along with 14 runs scored. Nick Herzog sits second on the squad in both categories with 31 hits and 17 RBI, respectively, off a .341 average, and paces the pack in runs scored with 25.  

Dylan Fashempour anchors a deep Boston staff with the freshman RHP owning a 1.53 ERA in eight appearances, five stats, and 29.1 innings of action. Fashempour's 30 strikeouts are first among UMass' arms. Bobby Tramondozzi has proven himself as the closer for the Beacons with eight saves over 14 appearances. IN 17.2 innings of action, he has compiled a 1.02 ERA and fanned 222 hitters. 

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • Suffolk and UMass Boston are no strangers to one another as the two Bay State foes have faced off 37 times. 
  • Overall, the Rams lead the series 24-13. 
  • For the second straight season the two city rivals spilt the regular-season series.
  • With Anthony Del Prete as skipper, Suffolk sits 3-3 against the Beacons.
