Six Suffolk Athletes Earn GNAC Recognition as 2009 Fall Season Kicks Off

Boston, MA - With the 2009 Fall Sports season kicking off over the Labor Day weekend, the Suffolk University Rams posted a perfect 3-0 record as Women's Tennis, Women's Soccer and Men's Soccer were all victorious in their respective contests over the weekend. In doing so, six Suffolk University student-athletes earned recognition from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) for their efforts.

Sophomore Lauren Cameron (Kingston, Jamaica) was named GNAC Player of the Week for Women's Tennis. Cameron earned Rookie of the Year honors from the GNAC in 2008, posted 6-0, 6-0 victories in the two position as the Rams started their season with a 6-1 victory over Regis College on Thursday. Cameron also posted a victory in doubles play with partner Alexandra Hernandez-Vallant (Newton, MA) winning their set 8-1 in the first doubles spot. Sophomore newcomer Kelly Conrad (Lanstahl, Germany) earned GNAC Rookie of the Week honors as she was victorious in both singles and doubles play as well. Conrad posted 6-1, 6-1 victories in the four spot for the Rams and also won her doubles set with partner Rebecca Copeland (Bristol, RI).

Women's Soccer earned a 4-3 come from behind victory Saturday afternoon over Eastern Nazarene College to kick off their 2009 season. Freshman Kelsey Cavaretta (Marcellus, NY) was named GNAC Rookie of the Week for her four point effort on the afternoon. Cavaretta scored the Rams' first goal of 2009, and also added two assists. Sophomore Leslie Hayden (Ross, CA) was named to the GNAC's Weekly Honor Roll. The defending GNAC Rookie of the Year scored two goals in a two minute span to put the Rams ahead of the Lions 4-3. Hayden added an assist earlier in the game and led the Rams with four shots on goal.

Men's Soccer was victorious in Saturday's season opener 4-1 over Eastern Nazarene. Freshman Carlos Flores-Rodrigues (Madrid, Spain) was named GNAC Rookie of the Week. Carlos' first collegiate goal would turn out to be the game winner against the Lions. Sophomore Danny Lloyd (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) was named to the GNAC's Weekly Honor Roll. Lloyd scored two goals in a five-minute span, and had four shots on goal for the Rams.

Women's Tennis will be back in action on Thursday as they take on Pine Manor College. Men's Soccer hosts Umass-Boston Tuesday evening, while Women's Soccer hosts Daniel Webster on Wednesday . Volleyball kicks off their 2009 season Tuesday evening as they host Becker College, while Men's and Women's Cross-Country travel to Mass-Maritime Academy over the weekend for their first meet of 2009.
