Top Moments Bracket Style: Ram Nation You Decide 2015-16's Best Moments

BOSTON  - Suffolk athletics saw some memorable milestones, postseason peaks, record setting moments, honors and more over the 2015-16 seasons. Now is the time to pit the best of the best against one another in a bracket-style competition to see what Ram Nation dubs as the Top Moment of the Year.  

Each Monday a new round of the bracket will be revealed at 11 a.m. with voting open until the following Monday at 9 a.m. Select one moment fem each matchup below and hit submit to cast your vote. The moment with the most votes in each matchup will advance to the next round.The first round of voting will commence Monday, June 6. 

As you help the Department determine the best-of-the-best by voting in the bracket, here’s a deeper look at the Sweet Sixteen moments.  

MEMORABLE MOMENTS REGION 

  • Softball Breaks Single-Season Win Record
    Softball chased history this season and set multiple milestones along the way - Jaclyn Davis earning her 100 career coaching victory, winning the GNAC regular season title for the second straight season - and capped it off as the winningest team in the program’s 32-year history with a 33-9 overall record. 
     
  • Hockey Put Together 4th Most Wins All-Time
    Hockey, who hosted the ECAC Northeast Quarterfinals for just the second time in program history, put together the court most wins in the Rams’ record books, 13-10-2. 
     
  • Baseball Second-Most Wins in Program History
    With a 33-13 record, the baseball team put together the second highest win total in the program’s 69-year history. The 33 victories are also the second most among New England teams. 
     
  • Women’s Tennis Winningest Squad Since 2007
    Women’s tennis is the winningest squad since the 2007 Rams, who went undefeated 14-0, as this season’s squad went 10-5 overall and 5-1 against GNAC competition. 

MILESTONE REGION

  • Smolarek Stops 2,000
    Brandon Smolarek surpassed 2,000 saves in net for hockey Jan. 9, just the second Ram goalie to do so, and finished his career with 2,227 stops, second most all-time.
     
  • Unni Scores 1,000 in 100th Game
    Caleb Unni scored his 1,000th career point during his 100th game in a blue-and-gold uniform Feb. 13, becoming the 28th Ram to accomplish the the 1,000-point feat and first since Colin Halpin ’13 and Matt Pepdjonovic ’13 hit the mark in 2013.
     
  • Carroll Record Saver
    Cal Carroll became Suffolk’s single-season save leader April 10 with his sixth of the season. The right-handed pitcher also sits atop Suffolk’s all-time saves list with 15 in his four-year career.
     
  • Campellone Drops 43
    Chelsea Campellone put up a 43-point performance against Lasell Jan. 23, notching the program’s single-game scoring record during the Ed Leyden era, which spans 22 years, marking the most points scored by a Suffolk women’s basketball player inside Regan Gymnasium and ranking as the second most points scored in a single game in the program’s 40-year history.

POST-SEASON PEAKS REGION

  • Baseball’s First Back-to-Back NCAA Appearance
    Suffolk baseball made its first ever back-to-back trip to the NCAA Tournament this season as the fifth seed and sixth trip overall thanks to capturing its sixth GNAC Championship and straight straight conference crown. 
     
  • Regular Season GNAC Champs Softball Hosts Tourney
    For the second straight season, Suffolk softball claimed the GNAC regular season crown with an 18-4 mark against conference competition to host the league’s tournament at the Rams’ home field in East Boston Memorial Park.
     
  • Men’s Basketball Makes 4th Straight GNAC Tourney
    Men’s basketball won four of its last six games to claim seventh in the GNAC Tournament, marking its fourth straight trip to the conference championships. 
     
  • Women’s Basketball Semis Showdowns
    Women’s basketball made its 21st straight GNAC tournament appearance advanced to the semifinals for the 13th time in program history and earned a spot in the ECAC New England Championship for the eighth time.

HONORS REGION 

  • Heroes of the Week
    Women’s basketball’s Chelsea Campellone and baseball’s Jon Lapolla were named HeroSports HEROs of the Week in their respective sports. Campellone earned the recognition thanks to throwing down 43 points Jan. 23, while Lapolla took home the honor thanks to his 3-for-3 effort at the plate in a 7-3 triumph over UMass Boston March 17. He was one single short of the cycle, tallying a double, triple and home run to go along with four RBIs.
     
  • Baseball Collects 17 GNAC Awards
    Suffolk baseball collected 17 postseason awards by the GNAC for the 2016 season. A total of 10 players earned all-conference recognition by the league, while head coach Anthony Del Prete was named Coach of the Year, sophomore Worth Walrod was named Pitcher of the Year and Jake Frasca was tabbed Rookie of the Year. 
     
  • Selep Joe Concannon Semifinalist
    Justin Selep was tabbed a semifinalist for the Joe Concannon Award, given annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England at the NCAA Division II/III Level. Selep was included in a list of 22 top hockey players across two divisions in New England collegiate hockey and highlighted the hopefuls in the 16th annual honor. He is the first player from Suffolk to make the list since Kyle Cook’09 in 2009 and was one of 12 forwards on the biggest list of semifinalist since the award’s inaugural year in 2001. 
     
  • Women’s Tennis Sweeps GNAC Major Awards
    Women’s tennis made a powerful haul of honors as the Rams swept the GNAC major awards. Junior Aidiana Sagyndykova captured Player of the Year, while Valentina Medina was named Rookie of the Year. Suffolk swept the conference’s top honors for just the second time in program history and first time since 2008. Sagyndykova became the second member of the Rams to earn the league’s top award in back-to-back seasons and first since 2006.
