GENESEO, N.Y. – Suffolk women's cross country turned in a 16th-place showing at the 40th Mike Woods Invitational Saturday afternoon at the National Warplane Museum.
In one of the most competitive fields that the Rams raced in thus far in 2021 with student-athletes from nationally ranked programs like No. 13 Geneseo, No. 15 Middlebury, No. 26 RIT and No. 29 Rochester on the course in Genese, New York, the blue-and-gold held its own. In its first 6k of the season, Suffolk's top seven runners combined for for 445 points to finish 16th out of 29.
Individually, Gwen Koziara had the best performance. The freshman from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania clocked a 23:55.8 to finished 49th out of the 321-runner field.
Koziara's classmate Katelynn Brunt claimed a spot in the top 100 as well with a time of 24:30.1, good for 78th.
Freshman Cassidy Jarish and sophomore Sydney Fogg took spots in the top 125. Jarrish logged a 26:05.7 to place 113th, while Fogg came through the finisher's chute in 25:13.6 to lock up 124th.
Senior Skyler Spanbauer's 26:24.6 was good enough to place within the top 200.
Sarah Roberts (23:37.6) and first-year Christina Baggitt (26:43.2) rounded out Suffolk's scoers. The former placed 204th, while the latter was five spots behind the sophomore.
Ram rookies Therese McKeagney (26:47.7) and Melissa Sapini, who made her collegiate debut, (27:52.4) competed on the course as well.
Suffolk takes next weekend off before hosting its own meet, the Suffolk Invite Saturday, Oct. 16 at Franklin Park. The outing will serve as the Battle for Boston Commons, as well, which pits the Rams against their Boston neighbor Emerson in a head-to-head race.
