Women’s Tennis Sweeps Major GNAC Awards, Three Rams Recognized

GNAC RELEASE

BOSTON – Already laden with a record book season, the Suffolk women's tennis team made another powerful haul of honors with this year's sweep of the GNAC awards. Suffolk boasts the 2015 GNAC Player of the Year in Aidiana Sagyndykova, who rides an 11-1 record into her second straight selection as the conference's top player. Sagyndykova also stands tall as a three-time member of the conference's best single players. What's more, the Rams have the GNAC Rookie of the Year in Valentina Medina.

Suffolk swept the conference's top honors for the second time in program history. The last time the top player and rookie played at Suffolk was the 2008 season when Kaitlyn Cates '09 (player) and Lauren Cameron '12 (rookie) combined for the feat.

Sagyndykova becomes the second member of the Rams to earn the conference's top award in back-to-back seasons, joining 2005 and 2006 recipient Jen Nelson '07. The junior, who hails from Almaty, Kazakstahn collected the third All-GNAC first team singles nod of her career to become the first player in blue-and-gold to accomplish the feat. Atop of her single honors, Sagyndykova was joined with partner Rebecca Eshoo as the second team doubles pair. As the Rams' top tandem, Sagyndykova and Eshoo produced a 3-1 GNAC ledger and went 6-1 overall.

Medina, who earned a spot on the All-GNAC Tournament Team, is the third player in Suffolk history to be named the top rookie and first since Cameron brought home the accolade in 2008. The six-time GNAC Rookie of the Week went undefeated in singles play, 14-0, on the first two courts with six golden matches en route to a spot on the conference's singles first team.

Eshoo capped off her playing career at Suffolk with a spot on the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team. The all-sportsmanship team was established to honor one player from each team in the conference for outstanding dedication to sportsmanship and for their portrayal of good sportsmanship, fair play and a positive attitude.

Suffolk concluded its season Saturday night in a 5-4 heartbreaker to Johnson & Wales in the GNAC semifinals. The Rams produced a 10-5 overall record, the most victories since the 2007 squad went 14-1.
