Women’s Tennis Win-Streak Halted at Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE – The Suffolk women's tennis team's two-match season-opening, win-streak was halted at Rhode Island College Tuesday afternoon at the RIC Outdoor Tennis Courts, as the Rams dropped a 6-3 decision to the Anchorwomen.

Suffolk which opened the season 2-0 for the first time since 2009 dropped to 2-1 with the setback, while RIC captured its third straight match to improve to 3-1.

The Anchorwomen got on the scoreboard first as Suffolk's Jacquelyn Nakamura and Meagan French fell to Tressa Cannata and Laura Nastasi, 8-1, on the third doubles court. Valentina Medina and Aidiana Sagyndykova leveled the playing field as the sophomore and junior teamed up for an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles over Dayna Reilly and Julie Reddy. It was RIC who would take the advantage into singles play, however, as Rebecca Eshoo and Abby Trigilio were defeated by Sadi Campanella and Jorgie Martin, 8-3, in the second slot.

Nastasi kept up the pace for RIC heading into singles as notched a golden match over the Rams' Isabel Rathlev in the fifth spot. Trigilio was also defeated by a golden match from the racquet of Cannata on the fourth court.

With the host leading 4-1, Sagyndykova kept Suffolk's hope alive with a 6-4, 6-1, decision over Campanella in the second spot. Medina, the reigning GNAC CorviasRookie of the Week, made it a one-point match when she downed Reilly, 6-0, 6-3, in the first position.

Now only trailing by one, 4-3, the Rams looked to their captain, Eshoo, to keep things going. The senior, however, could not rally a comeback as she was defeated by Reddy, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3.

With the match already secured, Lyndsay Reese fell to Martin, 6-4, 6-3, to make the final 6-3 score of the Anchorwomen.

The Rams return to the court Thursday afternoon in Dartmouth, Massachusetts when it takes on the Corsairs at 3:30 p.m.
