Women's Tennis Falls to JWU, 6-3

 

The Johnson & Wales Wildcats topped the Suffolk University Rams, 6-3 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Tennis action on Tuesday evening.

The Wildcats were victorious in four of six singles matches and took a pair of doubles contests to improve to a 6-0-1 mark on the season, and 2-0 record in GNAC play. The loss now drops the Rams to a 2-6 overall record, while they have won one match in five tries among their conference slate.

Sophomore Samantha Jo Borr (Westfield, N.J.) was a multiple winner on the evening for the Wildcats. Borr took the top singles contest over senior Kelly Conrad (Lanstuhl, Germany), 6-2, 6-0 as she now improves to a perfect 4-0 for the Wildcats as their top singles player.

Sophomore Stephanie Piperis (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) upped her individual season record to a perfect 5-0 mark as she downed Suffolk sophomore Erica LeBlanc (Londonderry, N.H.), 6-4, 7-5 in the second singles game of the evening.

Earlier in the evening the four squared off in doubles competition as the Wildcats duo was victorious by an 8-6 score as they combined for their first win of the year as a tandem.

Sophomore Adrianna Garrett (Plymouth, Mass.) and senior Allison Weisenbach (Hamden, Conn.) each earned singles victories on the evening for the Rams. Weisenbach was the lone Suffolk player to earn multiple wins on the night for Suffolk. Weisenbach notched her team leading fifth victory of the season for the Rams in singles play with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the number five game as she topped sophomore Darcy Predieri (Sudbury, Ohio). Earlier she partnered with junior Melissa Chermely (Walpole, Mass.) for an 8-7 doubles victory that was won with a 7-2 tiebreak.

Garrett improved her singles record to 4-4 on the year with a victory over junior Ansley Sego (Naperville, Ill.) in the third singles match, 7-5, 6-1.

In the number four singles game, junior Victoria Ricciardi (Binghamton, N.Y.) collected her fifth victory of the season for the Wildcats winning in 6-1, 6-4 sets over junior Elizabeth Arkins (Melrose, Mass.). Ricciardi and Sego partnered early in the contest for an 8-2 doubles match victory.

Sophomore Elizabeth Sammelbraun (Evanston, Ill.) rounded out the field for the Wildcats as she was an 8-6 winner in the sixth singles position.

Both teams will be back in non-conference action later in the week. Johnson & Wales will play host to Salve Regina on Friday at 3:30pm. Suffolk will host Rhode Island College on Thursday evening at 6:00pm.
