Women's Tennis Fall In GNAC Quarterfinals

The Johnson & Wales University women's tennis team posted an 8-1 victory against Suffolk in the opening round of the 2011 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship, held at the Rhode Island College Tennis Courts on Thursday afternoon.

Senior Rebecca Copeland (Bristol, R.I.) partnered with freshman Adrianna Garrett (Plymouth, Mass.) picked up Suffolk's lone point of the evening as they were victorious 8-5 in the second doubles contest.

JWU had a 2-1 after doubles play with freshman Samantha Jo Borr (Westfield, N.J.) and fellow rookie Andrea Sultan-Campbell (Caracas, Venezuela) posting an 8-3 win at the top spot.  In singles play, JWU swept all six matches, including a marathon 7-6, 9-11, 10-7 win by freshman Stephanie Piperis (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) at No, 3 singles.  Borr recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No 1 singles position while Sultan-Campbell notched a 6-1, 6-1 win for the Wildcats at second singles.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 9-6 on the season while Suffolk wraps up the season with a 4-7 mark.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, October 22nd when they travel to top seeded Simmons for the semifinals of the GNAC Championship, starting at 11:00 a.m. at the Windsor School courts.
