Women's Tennis Fall to Emerson, 6-1 in GNAC Playoffs

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. --  Second seeded Emerson College defeated third seed Suffolk University 6-1 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament match at Pine Manor College.  The victory for the Lions moves Emerson into the championship match against top seeded Simmons College at the Winsor School at 11:00am on Sunday, October 24.

The Lions made quick work of the Rams, taking all three doubles matches for a 3-0 lead.  The Emerson number one doubles pair of Lacey Russell '14 (Roswell, Ga.) and Laura Miley '11 (Cranston, R.I.) defeated Alex Hernandez '11 (Newton, Mass.) and Lauren Cameron '12 (Kingston, Jamaica), 8-3.  At second doubles, Savannah Mosser '14 (Malibu, Calif.) and Gina Varamo '13 (Washington, N.J.) took an 8-1 victory over Jane Skorobogatova '14 and Kelly Conrad '12 (Lansthul, Germany).  Kelly McCarthy '11 (Saugus, Mass.) and Zara Niefield '12 (Cheltenham, Pa.) completed the sweep with an 8-3 win over Rebecca Copeland '12 (Bristol, R.I.) and Georgia Ward '14 (Exeter, R.I.).

Emerson also took wins at first and second singles with Russell downing Hernandez 6-0, 6-1, and Mosser taking out Cameron 6-0, 6-2.  The lone point for Suffolk came on a Skorobogatova 6-0, 60-1 win over Miley.

At fifth singles Alicia Pellegrin '14 (San Antonio, Texas) defeated Copeland 6-2, 6-0.  Since the match had been played to decision three set matches at fourth and sixth singles were not completed.

With the win Emerson improves its record to 10-1, while Suffolk falls to 9-4.
