The Suffolk University Women's Tennis squad competed in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT), which took place in Amherst, Mass. at Mount Holyoke, Smith, Amherst and Hampshire Colleges Oct.17-19.

Eight players represented the Rams over the weekend. Junior Kaitlynn Cates (Middlebury, CT) and sophomore Alex Hernandez-Vallant (Newton, MA) were listed as Suffolk's number one doubles team in the tournament. The Rams' number two team consisted of freshman Lauren Cameron (Kingston, Jamaica) and sophomore Rachel Troia (North Providence, RI). Senior Carla Mallqui (Quincy, MA) and freshman Rebecca Copeland (Bristol, RI) made up Suffolk's number three pair. Junior Thuy Le (Woburn, MA) and sophomore Katelyn Paquette (Southbury, CT) rounded out Suffolk's entries as its number four team.

Each player competed in a singles match and a doubles match. Cameron and Troia defeated Roger Williams' number one team of Leah Ribchinsky and Katelin Richard in the first round of the Gail Smith Draw (A Flight) 2-1. Cameron won her singles match, while Troia fell in her singles match. The Suffolk pair rallied to win its doubles match and finish off Roger Williams.

Cameron and Troia moved on to the second round of the Gail Smith Draw and lost 3-0 to Bowdoin's number one team of Sarah D'Elia and Brett Davis, who entered the tournament as the 4th ranked pair in the nation.

Cates and Hernandez-Vallant received a first round bye in the Gail Smith Draw and advanced to the round of 16 after beating Mount Holyoke's number one squad of Ashley Fallon and Elise Marifian 2-1.  Cates won her singles match, while Hernandez-Vallant dropped her singles match. However, the Rams rallied once again to win the doubles end of the match up. Cates and Hernandez-Vallant were eventually beaten 3-0 in the round of 16 against MIT's difficult number one team of Leslie Hansen and Anastasia Vishnevetsky.

Mallqui and Copeland lost 3-0 in the first round of the Chris Davis Draw (B Flight) at the hands of Colby's number four team of Anna Zieba and Kathryn Vergeyle. Le and Paquette also met the same 3-0 fate in the draw, as they lost to Connecticut College's number three team of Jessica Bender and Andera Soriano.

Mallqui and Copeland, along with Le and Paquette competed in a 1st round consolation in the Chris Davis Draw. Le and Paquette lost 3-0 to Smith's number four team of Nawal Mays and Maggie Steiner. Mallqui and Copeland also lost 3-0 to Babson's number three team of Liz Sheerin and Rebecca Stone.

"What really needs to be focused on here is that they played really good competition," Head coach Isaac Stahl said. "It was fantastic match experience for them. It really motivates the one's who weren't in the lineup to practice hard because they know they will have the opportunity to play top competition."
