Cates Named GNAC Player of the Year

Suffolk University Women's Tennis team garnered two top Great Northeast Athletic Conference honors after a strong regular season. Junior Kaitlynn Cates (Middlebury, CT) was named Player of the Year and freshman Lauren Cameron (Kingston, Jamaica) was named GNAC Rookie of the Year. Suffolk finished second in the GNAC regular season race, but lost in the conference semifinals of the championship tournament.

Playing out of the number one singles position, Cates amassed an overall record of 10-1 during the season, going 7-0 in conference play. Cates who was a member of the 2007 GNAC Championship team compiled a record of 23-1 over the past two seasons. She was named GNAC Player of the Week this season on two occasions (9/22, 10/13). She was also 9-0 in doubles matches with partner Alex Hernandez-Vallant. Both Cates and Hernandez-Vallant were named to the All-Conference team for doubles.

Freshman Lauren Cameron (Kingston, Jamaica) was tabbed GNAC Rookie of the Year. In her freshman campaign, Cameron has been dominate going 11-0 overall and 7-0 in conference, playing in the the No. 3 position.

Both Cates and Cameron were also named to the first team All-Conference. Hernandez-Vallant, a sophomore from Newton, MA and Rachel Troia, a sophomore from North Providence, R.I., were also named to the GNAC first team. Hernandez-Vallant was tabbed GNAC Player of the Week on September 29 and finished with a record of 9-1 overall on the season and was also undefeated in conference play at 6-0. Troia was 9-2 overall and  6-1 in GNAC play.
