Barker Named CCC Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week

CCC RELEASE

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Suffolk women's soccer's Sophia Barker has been recognized by the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) with a pair of weekly awards as the freshman took home CCC Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week for her efforts in net in the Rams 1-0-1 opening week, the league office announced.

The Old Saybrook, Connecticut product, Barker started her collegiate career with a pair of shutouts. In the season opener at Elms, she saved four shots in the 0-0 draw. Two days later, she stopped three shots in a 1-0 win at Framingham State.

Barker currently is tied for first in save percentage (1.000), goals against (0) and goals against average (0.00) in the conference.

Barker, who back stopped Suffolk to its best record through two games since 2011, is the first student-athlete to pick up a weekly recognition in the Ellie McDougall era. She is the first set of blue-and-gold gloves to garner CCC Defensive Player of the Week since Allison Rodrigues did so Nov. 1, 2021. That day was the last time a Ram grabbed a pair of weekly accolades from the league as well when Jazmya Harris earned both offensive player and rookie of the week.

Barker and Suffolk are back in action tonight, Tuesday, Sept. 6 when they welcome Bridgewater State to James A. Sartori Stadium at East Boston Memorial Park for the Rams home opener at 7 p.m.
