BOSTON – In its home opener Saturday afternoon, the Suffolk women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Rhode Island College at James A. Sartori Stadium at East Boston Memorial Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
RIC broke open the scoring in the 29th minute as Madyson Christian capitalized on a one-on-one out front of Julia Fieldsend, flipping the ball to the left side of the net from right 15-yard line to give the visitors a 1-0 edge.
Caliegh O'Brien looked to respond for the Rams a few minutes later, but both of the sophomore's attempts hit off two Anchromen defenders to keep the blue-and-gold off the board.
Four minutes later, Brittany DeGrooth took advantage of her own one-on-one with Suffolk's keep after the Anchormen once again beat the Rams' backline. DeGrooths shot bounced into the netting from 20 yards away to lengthen RIC's lead to two.
It turned into a three-goal game in the 41st minute as DeGrooth used a feed from the left side from sophomore defensemen Brooke Young to set up her second goal of the afternoon. The senior forward lifted the rock over Fieldsend's gloves to add to the Anchormen's margin.
For the second straight outing, O'Brien eliminated the shutout and put Suffolk on the scoreboard. The sophomore scored on a high kick from 15-yards out in the 69th minute.
Suffolk put on the pressure following O'Brien's goal, but DeGrooth was determined to complete the hat trick and she did so with a snipper from 18-yards out on the right side into the upper left of the net for the final 4-1 margin.
KEEPING UP WITH THE KEEPERS
- Fieldsend and Allison Rodrigues split time in net. Fieldsend earend the nod and made three saves in the first frame, while Rodrigues stopped seven attempts in the second stanza.
- Rhode Island also used two gloves in between the pipes. Starter Erica Edwards picked up the W with a two-save effort.
- Carissa Gaglione recorded three stops in relief effort in the second half.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
- O'Brien scored the lone goal for Suffolk, scoring for the second time in as many outings.
- The Rams had more corner opportunities than the Anchormen, 6-1.
- RIC outshot Suffolk, 22-9.
NOTEWORTHY
- O'Brien is on a two-game point streak.
- Rodrigues made a career-best seven saves.
- Mariella McEachren made her collegiate debut.
