Simmons Tops Women's Soccer, 2-0, in GNAC Saturday Action

EAST BOSTON, Mass. - The Suffolk women's soccer team was upended Saturday night by GNAC and city rival Simmons, 2-0, at James A. Sartori Stadium at East Boston Memorial Park.

Simmon's sophomore Kashka Gammon scored a pair of goals in the victory, while senior Briana Hayes stopped all six shots she faced for her second shutout of the season as the Sharks improve to a 7-6 overall record and 6-1 mark in GNAC play.

Gammon struck with her first goal of the evening in the game's 13th minute when she finished off a play that was started on a corner kick by senior Victoria Russo.

Russo and Gammon would hook up again in the second half for some insurance. Gammon knocked in a header off a lead pass from Russo for her team leading 10th goal of the year in the 51st minute of the contest.

Sophomore Jennifer Martin had Suffolk's best chance to score with five minutes in regulation. After being fouled in the box, Martin was awarded a penalty kick. On the free kick, Martin decided to shoot to her left and Hayes' right as the senior goalkeeper followed the play and preserved the shutout.

Simmons held 19-12 advantage in shots in the contest.

Freshman Kirsten Weiker collected 10 saves in the setback for the Rams, which dropped the netminder and Suffolk 3-11 overall and 2-5 against conference opponents.

Suffolk has a quick turn around as it hosts Johnson & Wales Monday night in Eastie at 6:45 p.m.
