Women's Soccer Fall Short to Lasell 2-1

The Lasell College women's soccer team used a pair of first half goals to defeat visiting Suffolk University, 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Taylor Field. The Lasers remained undefeated in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play at 8-0 while improving to 10-4 overall while the Rams slipped to 3-2-3 in conference play and 4-6-3 on the season.

Lasell controlled the run of play for long stretches throughout the contest, holding a 27-5 edge in shots and an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal. Devin Day (Hartland, Vt.) scored the first goal of the match for the Lasers, and Megan Cullen (Amesbury, Mass.) added to her season total with her ninth goal of the season. Erin Smith (Gorham, Maine) and Bridget Munnelly (Bellingham, Mass.) each recorded assists in the contest for the hosts. Sarah LaClair (Belchertown, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Lasell improving her record to 9-2 on the season while making a pair of saves.

Jennifer Martin (Higganum, Conn.) scored the Rams goal, her second of the year and keeper Melissa Brouillette (Shelton, Conn.) made nine saves in the match to keep Suffolk within striking distance throughout.

Lasell got on the board in the seventh minute when a driven ball from Erin Smith found an unmarked Devin Day at the top left corner of the six-yard box where the sophomore midfielder volleyed it into the net to make it a 1-0 game. A through ball from Munnelly put Megan Cullen in on Brouillette in the 28th minute of action which the sophomore forward coolly slotted home into the bottom left corner of the net to put the hosts in front 2-0.

Martin's goal in the 41st minute pulled Suffolk back within a goal as she corralled a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box and her strike beat a diving LaClair to the left post to make it 2-1.

Brouillette and the Suffolk defense thwarted several Lasell chances in the opening minutes of the second half, and Suffolk nearly equalized in the 59th minute when LaClair parried away a solid effort from Jessica Harmon (Huntington Beach, Calif.) to preserve the Lasers 2-1 lead. LaClair recorded another save in the 71st minute and Lasell held on to preserve the 2-1 victory.

Suffolk will square off with Simmons College on Sunday October 19th at 11:00 a.m. while Lasell will host Mount Ida on Saturday October 18th at 2:30 p.m. Lasell will honor the 2013 women's soccer team for their Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship at halftime of the men's soccer match which kicks off at 12:00 p.m. as a part of the Family and Friends weekend festivities.
