Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Tayla Andrews (Plymouth, Mass.) each scored twice and UMass Boston recorded a season-high 31 shots en route to a 4-1 victory over Suffolk University Wednesday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Field.
Ledin finished with two goals and an assist for a season-high five points, while Andrews added two second-half markers to help the Beacons to their first two-game winning streak of the season.
Juniors Amanda Pugliese (Pembroke, Mass.) and Brittany Castillo (Yarmouth, Mass.) each added assists in the win. For Pugliese it was her first point of the year after recording 17 as a sophomore, while Castillo picked up her team-leading third assist of the year.
Junior goaltender Dani Perkins (Murrieta, Calif.) picked up her first win of the year in her first start, by making one save on two Rams shots.
Taylor Miranda scored the lone Suffolk goal of the game, while junior netminder Melissa Brouillette made eight stops on 12 shots on goal.
For the second straight game UMass Boston dominated all the statistical categories. The Beacons recorded a season-high 31 shots, compared to just four for Suffolk; while UMass Boston also held a 12-2 edge in shots on goal and 8-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Ledin opened the scoring just 6:41 into the game off a strong through ball from Pugliese. The pass was briefly knocked away by a diving Brouillette, but Ledin recovered possession and was able to dribble away from the keeper, before launching a strike into the twine for a 1-0 lead.
The Beacons added to their lead just over two minutes later-when Pugliese and Ledin connected again. Pugliese sent a strong cross into the box where Ledin headed it home over the Rams' keeper's hands to push the lead to 2-0 at the 8:47 mark.
Suffolk continued the scoring spree at 10:32, when Hannah McNulty's through ball left Miranda one-one-one with the keeper and Miranda's low shot slipped by Perkins to cut the Beacons' lead to 2-1.
UMass Boston would dominate the rest of the half, earning a 17-4 advantage in shots.
The Beacons broke through just over 15 minutes into the second half when Andrews scored off of a Castillo corner kick. Castillo's kick curved into the box where Andrews deftly headed it in past the Rams defense.
Seven minutes later Andrews capped off the scoring with her sixth goal of the season. Ledin slipped a pass through two defenders to Andrews, who prompty dribbled by the final defender, before sending a low shot into the near corner for a 4-1 Beacons goal at the 68:25 mark.
From there the Beacons defense and bench took over, as the Beacons closed out the half with a 14-0 shot advantage.
UMass Boston will return to action Saturday afternoon when they host Little East Conference rival UMass Dartmouth at 1 p.m. in the Beacons conference home opener.
