Women's Soccer Fall to JWU 3-2

Sophomore Kayla Sypek (Westhampton, Mass.) scored all three goals to lead the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats to a 3-2 victory over the Suffolk University Rams in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Soccer action on Thursday evening.

Sypek broke a 2-2 tie with five minutes remaining in regulation as her shot from 15 yards turned out to be her second game-winning goal of the season, and sixth tally on the year.

The Rams jumped out to an early 1-0 edge in the ninth minute of the game as junior Gabrielle Balestrier (Mohnton, Pa.) netted her third goal of the season after she broke through the Wildcats defense by a pass from junior Taylor Miranda (Smithtown, N.Y.).

Both teams would go into halftime even at one goal a piece as Sypek was able to get the Wildcats on the board in the game's twenty-eighth minute. Sypek took a feed from sophomore Nicole Petrone (Branchburg, N.J.) as her shot was screened by some traffic in front of the Rams goal and went in.

The Wildcats grabbed a 2-1 lead quickly out of the break as Sypek scored her second tally of the evening four minutes into the second half as sophomore Cat Martin (Avon, Conn.) had a helper on the play.

Suffolk would score five minutes later to even the game as sophomore Danielle Resha (Wakefield, Mass.) netted her second goal of the season with some nice passing from the Rams offense as she was led  upfield by Balestrier and freshman Lisa Gambale (Swampscott, Mass.).

Sypek's third goal of the evening propelled the Wildcats to a 3-6 overall mark on the season, and 2-2 record in GNAC play. The Rams now fall to 2-6 on the year and 2-4 in league action.

The Wildcats held the advantage in shots in the game with a 16-8 margin.

Sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Brouillette (Shelton, Conn.) made 10 saves in a losing effort for the Rams.

Freshman Cassie Collins (Oswego, N.Y.) had to make just two saves in the win.

Both teams will be back in GNAC action on Saturday afternoon. Johnson and Wales will travel to Anna Maria College to take on the AMCATS at 11:00am. Suffolk will travel to Rivier College to take on the Raiders at 1:00pm.
