Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 GNAC Match to Emerson

The Emerson College Lions outlasted the Suffolk University Rams by a 2-1 margin in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Soccer action on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Riana Odin (Trumbull, Conn.) broke a 1-1 tie in the game's fifthy-fifth minute with a shot from thirty yards away from the goal that bounced over the head of Suffolk sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Brouillette (Shelton, Conn.) for what would turn out to be the game-winner.

The Lions jumped out to a quick 1-0 just two minutes into the contest as senior Elizabeth Corti (Blue Hill, Pa.) sent up a pass deep upfield to freshman Mollie Coyne (Hamilton, N.J.). Coyne converted the pass with a shot on the right side of the goal for her second tally of the season giving the Lions the early edge.

Suffolk would get on the board in the game's twenty-fifth minute. Junior Gabrielle Balestrier (Mohnton, Pa.) would get the scoring play started with a corner kick from the right of the goal. Balestrier lifted a ball in front of the net, that was headed in on a loose ball scramble by freshman Binglei Zhou (Shanghai, China) for her first collegiate career goal.

Odin's goal lift Emerson to a 3-0 record to start the 2012 season, while the contest was the first league conference for both teams. The loss drops Suffolk to an 0-3 mark on the young year.

Emerson will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon as they travel to Johnson & Wales University to take on the Wildcats at 3:30pm. Suffolk will host Emmanuel College on Wednesday at 7:00pm at their home Dilboy Stadium.
