Hayden, Women's Soccer Open Season with 2-1

Senior Leslie Hayden (Ross, Calif.) scored in the game's 66th minute to give the Suffolk University Women's Soccer team a 2-1 victory over Eastern Nazarene College (1-1 overall) to open the 2011 season on Saturday afternoon.

Hayden made a couple of shifty moves to elude two Lions' defenders scoring from 15 yards out for her first goal of the season, and ninth game-winning goal of her career.

Sophomore Meghan McHale (Halifax, Mass.) got the scoring started in the 54th minute of the contest as her free kick from half field took a bounce over sophomore Lions' goalkeeper Lisa Clark (West Deptford, N.J.).

The Lions would answer just two minutes later on an individual effort by senior Kara Webber (Marshfield, Mass.). Webber had her initial shot blocked by freshman Suffolk goalie Melissa Brouillette (Shelton, Conn.). Webber would continue to fight and grabbed a Rams turnover in front of the net putting home the Lions' first and only score of the game.

Brouilette made six saves in the win for Suffolk, earning her first collegiate victory in goal in her career debut.

Clark stopped four of six Suffolk shots on goal as she took the hard luck loss.

The Rams had the game's first scoring chance in the 17th minute of the contest as sophomore Taylor Miranda (Smithtown, N.Y.) missed a header in front of the Lions' goal off of a corner kick off the foot of McHale.

Eastern Nazarene had a chance to score a minute after McHale's goal as freshman Juliana Speno (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) had a wide open net but put her shot off the goal post.

The Lions held the edge in shots in the contest at 14-9, including a 12-2 advantage in the second half.

Hayden's goal was the 52nd goal of her career which now moves her into solo position of ninth place all time among scorers in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), while her 1.08 goals per game average is fith all-time in league history.

Eastern Nazarene College will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon as they host UMass-Boston at 3:30pm. Suffolk will be in action on Wednesday evening as they take on Daniel Webster College in a non-conference matchup at Dilboy Stadium beginning at 6:00pm.
