Somerville, MA - Sophomore Leslie Hayden (Ross, CA) had a career-night as the Rams exploded for nine goals en route to a 9-0 shutout victory over Mass. Maritime Academy on a chilly Wednesday evening at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, MA. Junior goalkeeper Emily Joyce (Easton, MA) needed to make just two saves to post her third straight shutout pushing her scoreless minutes streak to 310 minutes.
Hayden scored a career-high six goals on the night, now giving her 17 on the season, matching her season total from her freshman campaign in 2008 in which she was named GNAC Rookie of the Year. Hayden becomes the 21st player in NCAA Division-III Women's Soccer history to score at least 6 goals in one game (Beth Byrne of Franklin & Marshall holds the record with 10, 10/29/88) In 25 career games, Hayden now has scored 34 times for the Rams. The nine goals scored by Suffolk were the most a Rams' team has scored in their three-year history as a varsity program.
It took Hayden a little over two minutes to strike for her first goal of the evening as freshman Kelsey Cavaretta (Marcellus, NY) hit her with a feed across the Buccaneers goal box for the game's first strike.
Cavaretta added a goal of her own in the game's 27th minute receiving a cross-field pass from sophomore Gina Dean (Revere, MA) for her second score of the season.
Hayden would add two more goals in the first half giving the Rams a 4-0 edge. Hayden scored the Rams third goal picking up a loose ball in front of the net after a shot off the foot of junior Janet Girardot (Redwood City, CA). Hayden then scored with seven minutes remaining as she took the ball on her own going end to end beating three Buccaneers defenders for her third hat trick of the season.
Hayden and the Rams did not relent in the second half as her speed proved to be too much for the Bucs' to handle. The speedy forward scored three more goals all on breakaways. Her fourth goal came off a pass from freshman Erika Ciccariello (Billerica, MA), who led Hayden past the defense. Hayden would later score her sixth goal of the night, and seventeenth of the season after scoring off her own rebound as she was left alone with Buccaneers' goalkeeper Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, MA).
Johnson made 20 saves on the night for Mass. Maritime Academy as she was under pressure all evening from a potent Rams' attack.
Suffolk outshot the Bucs 46-3, as freshman Kim Courcy (Warwick, RI) was the only player to register a shot on goal for the Bucs as she accounted for all three shots.
Junior Marie Andre Trombetta (Guatemala City, Guatemala) added her second goal of the season as she opened up the Rams scoring in the second half, eleven minutes into the period on a pass from Cavaretta.
Cavaretta finished the night with a goal and two assists, the second time this season she has had a muti-assist game. It was her second four-point game of the season.
Prior to the game Rams' defender Janet Girardot sang the National Anthem.
Suffolk will be back in action on Saturday as they take on cross-town rival Emerson College at 12:30pm in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match.
