No. 12 Colby Clips Women’s Hockey, 6-3

WATERVILLE, Maine – All of Suffolk women's hockey's comeback attempts fell just short as the nationally-ranked Mules of No. 12 Colby used its early 3-goal edge to skate past the Rams, 6-3, Tuesday night at the Jack Kelley Rink.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 3 | No. 12 Colby 6
RECORDS: Suffolk (2-5-0) | No. 12 Colby (1-0-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Colby charged out to a comfortable 3-0 cushion in the first 20 minutes.

The first goal came at the midway point as Breanna Studley put away a feed by Jo Tatersall and Sophie Meisness away.

Just about six minutes later, Lulu Gray etched her name on the scoresheet with help from Courtney Schumacher to pad the margin to a pair.

Less than a minute later Anna Staton struck thanks to assists from Georgia Pettergrove and Schumacher to put the Rams in a three-goal hole at the first intermission.

Kate Pohl erased the shutout as she lit the lamp 3:32 into the middle period. The grad student took the puck from a pair of Colby players on the boards for a one-on-one with Grace Caligiuri. The Ram snuck the puck by the netminder stick side to put the blue-and-gold on the board.

Colby restored its three-goal advantage at the 10:54 mark of the second stanza when Pettygrove potted a goal of her own. Sydney McCormack aided on the goal that made it a 4-1 game.

Suffolk had another burst of energy out of the locker room. This time Jenna Caballero had the puck on the left side of the boards, dished down to Katie Newkirk, who sat behind the net. Newkirk found Bella Schmidt waiting in front of the cage for a quick wrister that trimmed the margin down to two, 4-2, with 13:26 to go in the third.

The Mules once again answered for Suffolk's score with one of its own when Audrey Shirer found the back of the twine with 4:01 left on the clock.

A power play goal by Sam Molind with 2:22 on the clock made things interesting. The senior sniped a shot on the man-up advantage thanks to a set-up by Alexia Hill to pull the Rams back within two, 5-3.

Katelyn Michals left her post from in between the pipes at the 19:15 mark to give Suffolk the extra skater boost. It was the Mules that capitalized, however, as Molly Lefebvre scored the empty netter to restore the three-goal gap, which remained at the final whistle.
