SUFFOLK WOMEN'S HOCKEY ALL-TIME CAPTAINS
BOSTON – Suffolk women's hockey will be led by a foursome as first-year head coach Abby Ostrom has unveiled the Rams' leadership group for the 2023-24 campaign. Seniors Lily O'Neil and Vanessa Stuart will serve as co-captains with senior Elise Wainwright and junior Sammy Lassman sharing the assistant captain role.
"They have done a tremendous job so far welcoming the very large incoming group of student-athletes and teaching them what it means to be a part of a winning culture," Ostrom said. "In different ways, each member of the leadership group stepped up this fall to lead our program in a positive direction."
The group, who all begin their first term in the captain role, is the second-ever foursome to wear a letter in the program's six-year history, first since the inaugural captains in 2020-21: Shana Cote (C), Madison Duff (C), Payton Dockus (A) and Julia Volpe (A).
O'Neil, the first-ever goaltender to earn the role, has been a staple between the posts for the blue-and-gold over the last three seasons. The Abington, Massachusetts, local started all, but five of Suffolk's games in net a year ago and assembled a 1.61 GAA and .939 save percentage. Over the course of her career, she has built a career GAA of 2.01 and a save percentage of .922 with a 22-17-1 ledger that includes four cleansheets.
Stuart, a forward from St. Lazare, Quebec, skated in all 28 games in 2022-23 and provided two points to the Rams' 81-goal offense including the game-winning goal in a 4-1 decision over Nichols, Nov. 12, 2022. Throughout her career, she has appeared in 53 games and has registered two goals and four helpers.
Lassman, a junior transfer, who brought her talents to Beacon Hill from Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Curry, has been a staple on the line chart since putting on blue-and-gold in 2021-22. A year ago, the Parkland, Florida, product had career numbers with three markers and eight handouts.
Wainwright, a blue liner that calls Milford, Michigan home, was a consistent contributor to the offensive output in 2022-23 with four goals and eight helpers. In 58 career games, she has notched four strikes and 13 assists.
Suffolk's sixth season gets underway this weekend at the Utica Kick-Off Tournament. The Rams will tangle with No. 13 Utica in the season-opener Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. and will face either No. 6 Adrian or No. 12 Elmira Saturday, Oct. 28.
