Women’s Hockey Forces 2-2 Tie at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Suffolk women's hockey fell in a two-goal hole after the first period and worked its way out with one goal in the second and third to level the playing field against the University of New England. Neither team managed to break the tie and the Commonwealth Coast Conference contest ended in a 2-2 draw Friday night at Harold Alfond Forum.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNE scored two goals in a 4:05-span in the opening period to take a two-goal lead over Suffolk. Maeve Crehan started the scoring at the 8:03 mark with Avery Putrzykowski adding a power play goal just over four minutes later.  

Miranda Gaudet put the Rams on the board 6:33 into the middle period with help from Jesse Kennedy and Liliana Moose.  

Gaudet got the gap down to one, 2-1, with plenty of time left in regulation, however, the blue-and-gold had a flare for the dramatic and did not pot the equalizer until there were less than two minutes remaining in the third period. Cassidy Gruning managed to put away the game-tying goal at the 18:05 minute mark to lock things at 2-all. Shana Cote and Vanessa Stuart aided in the strike.  

Suffolk commanded the extra session, outshooting the Nor'Easters, 11-1, but Delanie Corcoran turned aside all of the Rams attempts to keep things even at the final buzzer. 

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Lily O'Neil registered 16 saves in the stalemate. 
  • Corcoran had a stand-up day in between the pipes with 52 saves. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Gruning and Gaudet scored one goal apiece for the Rams. 
  • Moose, Cote, Kennedy and Stuart all dished out one assist. 
  • Suffolk heavily outshot UNE, 54-18, and won the face off battle, 46-28. 
  • The Rams went 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Nor'Easters went 1-for-3 on their man-up chances.

  • Suffolk moves to 5-1-2 all-time against the University of New England.
