Women’s Hockey Skates Past Salve Regina, 5-1

EAST BOSTON, Mass. – Suffolk women's hockey defeated Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent, Salve Regina, 5-1, as three different Rams tallied three points en route to the win Saturday night at Louis. E Porazzo Memorial Skating Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a battle in front of the crease, Suffolk opened the scoring when Sofia Scilipoti made a quick wrist shot that found the back of the net at 12:18 in the first period. Shana Cote and Miranda Gaudet assisted on the goal, putting Cote firmly in the Suffolk history books as the first player in the programs history to record 100 career points in a Rams jersey. 

Salve Regina knotted the score at 1-1 at 11:33 in the second period with a wrap-around shot from the side of the net by Samantha McKenzie. The Seahawks goal was assisted by Morgan Peritz and Ani Flaherty. 

The Ram's broke the tie at 18:22 in the second period when Madison Duff took a slapshot from the blue line that was redirected in front by Jesse Kennedy to take a 2-1 lead. Cassidy Gruning also assisted on the goal. 

The blue-and-gold put its third goal in the back of the net at 9:33 in the third period with a power play strike scored by Leslie Steiner, assisted by Elise Wainwright and Livia Brehm

Suffolk added to its lead less than two minutes later when Cote scored in front of the crease with passes coming from Scilipoti and Gaudet.  

The first-line trio each tallied their third point of the game when Scilipoti made a flashy move into the attacking zone to put home a wrist shot coming with her from her linemates Gaudet and Cote to make things 5-1 with 3:35 left in the third.  

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Lily Gordon stopped 13 shots in the winning effort.
  • Elle Kopecky had 24 saves for the Seahawks. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Suffolk outshot Salve Regina 29-14.
  • The Rams had the advantage in the face-off circle, 28-15.
  • Cote (1g, 2a), Scilipoti (2g, 1a), and Gaudet (3a) each tallied three points in the victory.
  • Kennedy found the back of the net once. 
  • Brehm, Duff, Gruning and Wainwirght all dished out one assist. 
  • Gaudet picked up three assists.
  • McKenzie's goal was the first of the season for the Seahawks and the first of her career.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Cote scored her 100th career point after assisting on the first goal of the game, making her the first to do so solely at Suffolk University. She is the second-ever Ram to produce 100 points in the program's history behind Tess Adams '19, who achieved the feat with a combined effort of offensive output as a Ram and at SUNY Canton. 
  • At 3-1-0, Suffolk is off to its second-best start in program history. 
  • Suffolk is unbeaten, 5-0-0, all-time versus Salve Regina.
  • The Rams have outscored the Seahawks 17-2 in the five contests.
  • The five goals versus Salve are the most for the blue-and-gold in an outing versus SRU in the all-time series. 
  • The four-goal margin of victory ties the largest winning margin for Suffolk over the Seahawks in the all-time meetings. The last time the blue-and-gold down SRU by four tallies was a 4-0 shutout Feb. 15, 2022. 
  • Suffolk converted its second power play goal of the season.­
  • Cote extended her point streak to 12 games with 10 goals and 14 assists in that span.
  • Cote scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
  • Kennedy netted her first goal of the campaign.
  • Steiner found the back of the net for the second time this season.
  • Wainwright tallied her first point of the season with an assist.
  • Scilipoti's two goals were her first two of the year.
