
JACA, Spain – Sofia Scilipoti of the Suffolk women's hockey team skated with the Spanish National team at the Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women's World Division II Championships, April 3-8. The Rams' junior aided to Spain's third-place finish in Group A.
Scilipoti, a native of Toronto, Ontario, joined Spain for the championships in all four games including victories over Latvia, Chinese Taipei and Mexico and a setback to Great Britain.
Spain's championships schedule began Sunday, April 3 with a 1-0 shootout, overtime win over Latvia. Scilipoti participated in the shootout, but her shot was gloved by the opponent's netminder. Two days later, Scilipoti lit the lamp once with a highlight-reel goal in a 3-1 loss to Great Britain. From there, the forward aided to victories over Chinese Taipei (4-1) and Mexico (2-0) April 7-8.
The IIHF Women's World Division II Championships marks the second time that Scilipoti has skated with Spain. She made her red-and-yellow debut at the 2022 Olympic Qualifier Tournament, Oct. 3-10, 2021.
Scilipoti was instrumental to Suffolk's first season in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) campaign, which ended as the Rams' winningest in program history with a 19-6-0 overall record. The All-CCC second-team selection provided29 points to the blue-and-gold's 97-goal offense with 12 markers of her own and 17 set-ups.
